Telling the story of Jorj, a man the size of giants, and his vendetta against the creatures found on the mountain, you may be expecting a third-person action-adventure. In fact, Grindstone is a puzzler.
Each level begins with our hero facing down a variety of different coloured enemies. By drawing a path on their iOS touchscreen (on using the mouse on your Mac), players send Jorj careening through enemies of the same colour with the tap of a button.
Each cartoonish kill is punctuated by a squishing, splattering sound, as chunks and viscera are left in the wake of Jorj’s rampage. It sounds gross, but the colours and exaggerated sounds give it a strange sense of levity.
The titular Grindstone drops when chaining together ten kills in a single move, and these allow Jorj to change the colour of enemies targeted. This leads to a fun rhythm of setting a path through swathes of blue enemies (for example), before picking up the grindstone and going to town on a bunch of different coloured ones.
Where the stakes are raised is the presence of “Angry” enemies. These enemies will appear on the map, and ending Jorj’s run of killing in one of the spaces around them leads to the loss of a life. It makes things much harder, and Grindstone is a fantastic puzzler for your commute.
The Verdict – 4/5
