Someone’s working on a Telltale-style Vampire: The Masquerade role-playing game

After 15 years on the shelf, Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines is getting a sequel. Now comes word that there’s a second role-playing game in the works, and it’s expected to feel a lot like a Telltale-style of narrative adventure game.

During this past weekend’s PDXCON fan convention, publisher Bigben gave out a few more details about the project, called Vampire: The Masquerade — Swansong. It’s due out in 2021 from a little studio called Big Bad Wolf. They’re best known for The Council, an elaborate narrative adventure game that’s big on conversation trees.

The Council also includes fully three-dimensional environments, point-and-click adventure game mechanics, and a Telltale-style reputation system with a branching narrative. You can watch a full playthrough of the game’s first season on YouTube to get a feel for it. The game is available on PlayStation 4, Windows PC via Steam, and Xbox One.

According to a press release Bigben sent out over the weekend, Swansong will take its mechanical cues from the new fifth edition of the Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop RPG.

“The player takes control of 3 vampires belonging to different clans of the Camarilla, the secret society to which most vampires belong,” according to the press release. “Weaving between their intertwined tales, the player has to confront the different points of view of his characters to unravel fact from fiction. With whispers of conspiracy, murder and power struggles, the player must protect his clan, discover the truth and above all enforce the Masquerade, the vampire law designed to conceal the existence of creatures of the night from humans.”

From what I’ve seen of The Council, the character design and cinematography alone make it a good template for something set in the World of Darkness. Expect more information throughout 2020.

Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 was recently delayed out of early 2020, and is expected to release sometime later next year.
