Anthem has been quietly sitting since BioWare released a Cataclysm patch in August. Cataclysm added new content and challenges to the game, but did not solve many of the core issues the game has. The Cataclysm itself was delayed after a long list of post-launch issues, including under-the-hood fixes for loot bugs and changes to stat scaling. It’s been a rough time for Anthem, and BioWare head of live service Chad Robertson posted an update on the troubled game on Tuesday.
“We were humbly excited by the increase in player engagement we’ve seen with the Cataclysm,” wrote Robertson. The team and I appreciate the response and support — it is what keeps us motivated to continue to improve Anthem” (emphasis original).
After thanking fans and promising to continue to listen to feedback, Robertson admitted that the game will need long-term support over content additions and “quick fixes.” He said, “We hear your concerns on core issues in Anthem and are acting on it. Those systems require a more thorough review and re-working versus quick fixes. We’ve got a team working on that now, and early results are promising.”
Because Anthem needs more work, Robertson said that BioWare won’t be continuing with its initial “Acts structure” plans for add-ons, which would have successively added more content to the game. Instead, BioWare will be launching seasonal updates that deliver “challenges and chases similar to what you’ve seen, and are built around some fun themes we’re bringing to the game.”
Robertson said the team did not have any news on what long-term changes would entail, but did note that BioWare would share them on the public test realm to give fans a chance to provide feedback.
The full statement is brief and light on details, but it seems that Anthem is getting the post-launch support it needs in the sense of big fixes. The rest of 2019 will bring new ways to play the existing loot shooter, and we may see an entirely new take on Anthem at some point in the new year.
