While Bungie’s Destiny 2 reveal livestream was largely focused on content that will be playable this year–including Season 11, which begins today–one of the most exciting bits of news concerned a feature that we’ll have to continue waiting for: cross-play.
During the stream, Bungie confirmed that it is looking to enable Destiny 2 cross-play, but that it’s something we won’t see until 2021 at the earliest. There were no specific details on how and when this will happen, but it’s nonetheless terrific news and something Destiny fans have been clamoring for for years.
During a subsequent stream with DrLupo, Bungie’s Luke Smith confirmed that cross-play will span PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Stadia. He also reiterated that the target is for the feature to be available in 2021.
A form of cross-play is coming that will span console generations within the same family before the full-blown implementation. Bungie announced that Destiny 2 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X, complete with free upgrades for current-gen console owners. But if you or a friend upgrade to a next-gen system before the other, you won’t necessarily be split apart. Xbox One and Xbox Series X players will be able to play together, while PS4 and PS5 players will be able to do so.
Bungie took a step toward connecting players across platforms with the introduction of cross-save last year. This allows you to play on one platform and then use that same account on another console, effectively letting you play with anyone on any system–provided you have access to the hardware and purchase the necessary access (some, but not all, content transfers between platforms). Cross-play would be the next step, letting you play with everyone no matter their system of choice.
