When we previewed Super Mario Maker 2 for Nintendo Switch last month, word from Nintendo was that the game wouldn’t let players meet up with their Switch friends to play the game’s multiplayer features online.
Now, Nintendo says it’s going to add that feature in a future update.
At E3 2019, producer Takashi Tezuka said the Super Mario Maker 2 team was “continuing our work,” even though the game will be released on June 28. Tezuka said through a translator that Nintendo is “making some changes to … matching with friends that you can play.” A tweet from Nintendo of America clarifies the point:
Tezuka “confirmed that the ability to play online multiplayer with friends is coming to [Super Mario Maker 2] in a future update,” the company said.
Multiplayer in Super Mario Maker 2’s Course World, where players can enjoy player-created levels, is fantastic and frantic. The ability to play it with friends online, not just random strangers, will make it even better.
