Breath of the Wild prequel Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity coming to Switch

A new Legend of Zelda title is being developed by Nintendo and Koei Tecmo games. It’s a sequel to 2014’s Hyrule Warriors — and a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, set 100 years before the events of that game. Titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, the hack-and-slash Zelda game is coming to Nintendo Switch on Nov. 20.

Nintendo and Koei Tecmo announced Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity on Tuesday with a video detailing the game’s story (seen above). Players will experience Hyrule before the Great Calamity of Breath of the Wild, fighting hordes of enemies — Dynasty Warriors-style — among familiar locations in the land of Hyrule before they are destroyed.

Playable characters include Link, Zelda, and the four Champions: Daruk, Mipha, Revali, and Urbosa. Nintendo promises “a robust story that depicts the events, relationships and dramatic moments of the Great Calamity in captivating detail.” The art style of Breath of the Wild will carry over to the new Hyrule Warriors.

In addition to Warriors-influenced hack-and-slash action, Nintendo says players will “solve environmental puzzles, unlock weapons and skills, craft materials, visit shops to obtain items and use the power of the Sheikah Slate” in the Breath of the Wild prequel.

In 2019, Nintendo announced a sequel to Breath of the Wild. That game is also bound for Nintendo Switch.
