Xbox Series X is one of the biggest launches of 2020, and Microsoft looks to have an ace up its sleeve which could give it a big next-gen advantage. This gen the Xbox team has seen the PlayStation surge ahead in terms of sales, and a big factor was arguably the amount of exclusives on offer. The PS4 has considerably more AAA exclusives than the Xbox One, which is underlined by PlayStation’s release schedule for next year.
Three of the biggest games of 2020 – Ghost of Tsushima, Last of Us 2 and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake – will only be on the PS4.
However, it looks like Microsoft are well placed to ensure that a repeat does not happen next gen.
Ahead of the Xbox Series X launch Microsoft has been busy adding to the devs included in its Game Studios portfolio.
Big name studios such as Ninja Theory and Obsidian have all been purchased by Microsoft.
- Is Nintendo Switch doomed by PS5 and new Xbox, or planning a twist?
And we’ve already seen the fruits of this labour start to bear with the unveiling of the mightily impressive Hellblade 2.
It remains to be seen what exclusives the Xbox Series X will have on day one with Halo Infinite one launch title that has been confirmed.
But aside from Halo Infinite and Hellblade 2, it looks like the Xbox Series X will have one other big selling point.
Microsoft has been busy assembling some top talent to work on a mysterious project for their new The Initiative studio.
The studio includes alumni from the teams that have worked on Witcher 3, God of War, Red Dead Redemption and Tomb Raider.
The upcoming game from The Initiative has been described as an AAAA title – underlining Microsoft’s ambitions for the studio’s first offering.
- PS5 2020 launch could be bad news for gamers not buying Xbox Series X
And Microsoft have delivered a big update about the project which looks set to be a major next-gen exclusive.
It has emerged that the first title from The Initiative is already in a playable form with some internal studio members going hands on with it.
And the Xbox team have teased that more details about the first game from The Intiative will be revealed in 2020.
Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty revealed the news in an interview with Game Informer.
The news comes as it’s emerged a member of the Santa Monica dev team that worked on 2018’s God of War has joined The Initiative.
Erik Jakobsen worked as an environmental design on God of War: Ascension as well as the critically acclaimed PS4 exclusive.
It’s another boost to Microsoft’s plans for the future which should mean they have a much better selection of exclusives for the next gen.
Speaking to Game Informer about what the future holds for Xbox, boss Phil Spencer said: “I think now that we’ve grown our first party to where it is today, I feel really good about the strength we have there.
“Obviously, as we go into [the new generation], we have higher aspirations to build a bigger business for the Xbox console business as well, and the team is completely aligned behind doing that.”
