An obscure Nintendo Power comic featuring Mario, Wario, and Princess Peach’s birthday has been scanned, and it’s a doozy.
Mario has seen some notable titles in the last few years. 2017 saw the release of the highly-acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey, one of the best-selling games that year. In 2018, Super Mario Party put the Mario Party series back on track. Last year saw the release of Super Mario Maker 2, a game in which over 10 million courses have been uploaded already.
The Mario series is full of colorful characters. Mario’s greatest enemy is undoubtedly Bowser, but the hero also has a pesky rival by the name of Wario. Along with his name, Wario is the exact opposite of Mario in every way; Wario is rude, selfish, and always ready to steal some gold. The character made his debut in Super Mario Land 2, where he took over Mario’s Castle.
Wario was popular enough to star in his own series of platformers, such as Wario World and Wario Land: Shake It! Perhaps more famously, Wario is the star of the WarioWare series, with the latest installment released in 2018 on the 3DS. It’s been awhile since Mario and Wario got into a squabble, but fans can check out one of their earlier encounters in a rare comic.
VideoGameArt&Tidbits, the Twitter account focused on posting official video game artwork, has Tweeted a rare Super Mario comic. According to the post, Mario vs. Wario: The Birthday Bash, was published only once in issue 56 of the defunct Nintendo Power magazine. The story follows Mario and Wario vying for Peach’s affections by buying her the perfect(?) gift. Check it out below.
This comic is a fascinating relic, because it was made when Nintendo had a bit more fun with the character’s personalities outside the games. For more comics like this, fans should go pick up the Super Mario Bros. Adventures graphic novel, which contains other Mario comics originally published in Nintendo Power. Interestingly, another Mario vs. Wario story is included.
What’s next for Wario? Hopefully for fans, the next WarioWare or Wario Land is announced soon. One simply cannot keep the greedy character down for long.
