Techland Community Manager Denies Rumors Of Potential Microsoft Acquisition

Techland’s community manager has debunked recent rumors surrounding a potential Microsoft acquisition.

Addressing the rumors on Twitter on Saturday, Techland’s community manager claims that the same rumors surfaced a year ago and that the situation is the same as it was back then. They then reaffirm their stance by stating that Techland is still an independent studio and that “it was not acquired by another publisher”.

These rumors came about after a number of websites (such as Wccftech) published coverage of industry insider Jeremy Penter’s (ACG) podcast, Defining Duke. In the podcast, Penter claims that Xbox and Microsoft are looking to acquire a massive 2021 exclusive by acquiring a developer/publisher. Another insider, Nick Baker, backed up Penter by claiming that he believed Penter was referring to Techland and Dying Light 2.

Even though the rumors surrounding Microsoft’s acquisition of Techland appear to be false, there’s no denying that Microsoft is currently searching for another developer/publisher to buy. The company has been involved in several rumors since Bethesda’s acquisition, with big names like Sega and Gearbox tipped as potential targets.

After Microsoft claimed that it would continue to acquire developers to bolster its impressive lineup of first-party studios, many have been fixated on the company’s upcoming business dealings. It’s likely that Microsoft will find a developer sooner rather than later, so we could end up seeing another acquisition at some point this year.

As for Dying Light 2, development of the game has been very slow and has undergone several delays, likely due to the impact of the pandemic and the departure of several key writers over the course of the past year. However, Techland has recently reassured eager fans that development is currently on track, and a recent leak detailing the contents of the game’s collector’s edition could suggest that we may be getting Dying Light 2 sooner than we think.

Right now, Dying Light 2 does not have a release date, but what we do know is that the game will be coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about a potential release date at some point later in the year.
