Taipei Game Show and several announcements cancelled due to coronavirus outbreak

The Taipei Game Show was due to take place next week, but the organisers made the decision Friday (rightly) to cancel the event due to the ongoing issues in China concerning the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

The Coronavirus is reported to have infected more than 9,000 people so far – with the death toll rising to at least 258 at the time of writing.

The Taipei Game Show attracts more than 320,000 visitors to the annual event and this year was due to host some pretty big game reveals.

It was confirmed that the four-day showcase would host new content for Last of Us 2, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Nioh 2, from Sony.

Equally, it was believed that CD Projekt Red was due to show a new look at the recently delayed Cyberpunk 2077.

Elden Ring, a new game collaboration between Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin and FromSoftware (the studio responsible for Dark Souls series) was also set to show new gameplay.

On Friday the organisers issued the following statement (Via VG247.com) confirming they were putting the event on hold, with no clear date set for when it might return.

“We are deeply sorry to announce the different decision from our committee,” a spokesperson said.

“2020 Taipei Game Show was originally scheduled to take place on Feb 6 – Feb 9. However, due to the serious outbreak of Wuhan coronavirus, we have decided to postpone the event to this summer.

“Taipei Game Show is one of the iconic annual networking events. With that in mind, W.H.O. has declared global emergency as Wuhan coronavirus spreads. Considering mass gatherings like Taipei Game Show increase the chance of cluster infections, the organizing committee has decided to steer away from such unthinkable risks. We sincerely ask for exhibitors’ understanding on such a major decision. The detail of the execution on the postponement will be carefully discussed, and will be announced in the upcoming days.

“The location remains unchanged at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 1. The specific time and date will be announced in the upcoming days by the organizing committee. As for the team who are still deciding the withdrawal from the events. We will announce the refund or regulations to all the participants.”

At the time of writing it's not clear what, if anything, the gaming companies may do in response. It's quite possible these reveals could be scuppered entirely.

Alternatively, with PlayStation supposedly on the brink of holding a special meeting to showcase their new Sony PS5 console, it's entirely possible we might see some of the reveals rescheduled for Sony's upcoming event.

The majority of games have a strong relationship with Sony, so it's not crazy to think they might buddy up.

Cyberpunk 2077 might be the only game which might look to avoid revealing anything during the Sony event, instead choosing to add more polish to the game which isn't due for release until September 12, 2020.
