EA’s multiplayer starfighter game is getting free DLC after all, including two of the most powerful ships in the Star Wars universe.
You remember when developer EA Motive said that there wouldn’t be any DLC for Star Wars: Squadrons, because they considered the game to be one and done? Well, it turned out they lied – and thank goodness for that.
On Wednesday, November 25 a new map will be included with update 3.0 of the game. It’ll be called Fostar Haven and is based on the same area from the single-player game, with the option to play it in both Dogfight and Fleet Battles mode.
The update will also add four new components, including a Boost Extension Kit for fighters and bombers, Ion Rockets for interceptors and fighters, Prototype Piercing Torpedoes for bombers and fighters, and an Anti-Material Rocket Turret support craft.
After that, sometime in December there’ll be update 4.0, which will include two new fighters: the B-wing and TIE Defender.
The B-wing was conspicuous by its absence in the launch version of the game, which makes you wonder how long this DLC has been planned for, and is usually portrayed as the most heavily armed and armoured fighter bomber in the New Republic (née Rebel Alliance) navy.
The TIE Defender is the B-wing’s rough equivalent on the Imperial side but unlike all the other ships it’s never appeared in the movies (although it was in the cartoons) and was instead created for Squadrons’ spiritual predecessor Star Wars: TIE Fighter, from 1994.
The 4.0 update will also allow for custom matches, allowing you to create your own rules and modifiers, which again is more than welcome.
Perhaps EA were just waiting to see how popular the game was before committing to the DLC but whatever’s going on it lends credence to the idea that the secret new Star Wars game that Motive are working on is probably a sequel to Squadrons – or at least something in the same vein.
These won’t be the only updates for Squadrons though as it’s also getting a next gen upgrade for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, although it’s not clear if that will be part of either of these updates or something separate.
