Dantooine is the first planet in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic where you get to explore it as a Jedi and force user. As such, the game also gives you a look into the role the Jedi play in society at this point in the Star Wars timeline. One of those roles is to serve as a crime solver, which is the basis of the Murdered Settler side quest in KOTOR.

How To Start Murdered Settler In KOTOR

The quest takes place in the Grove section of Dantooine, specifically at the bridge by the river that runs in the middle part of the Grove map. There you will find a Twi'lek Jedi named Bolook. Note that you won't be able to do this quest if you have escaped from the Leviathan, as access to Dantooine is cut off from you after you escape the ship. You must also accept it as soon as you run into it, since refusing to do it will block you from completing it.

Talk to Bolook and he'll tell you he's investigating the murder of a settler named Calder Nettic. He'll tell you that Calder was out hunting in the cloudy morning when he was seemingly killed by one of two people, Rickard Lusoff and Handon Guld.

Bolook will inform you that both men have a noticeable injury, Lusoff with an ankle injury and Guld clutching his own side. On top of that, blood was found on Calder's rifle, which is currently being analyzed. Bolook will bring a droid with him to help you with additional information, and your party members won't be able to help you here, so it is all on your detective skills to solve the case.

Questioning The Suspects

To get down to the bottom of the investigation, you must question the suspects and then verify the information with the droid. After that, you must tell Bolook which one of the two men is lying. There are four rounds of questioning that you must do if you want to solve this murder and you can analyze the body and rifle, but it's not needed to complete this quest.

Round One

The first round of questioning involves verifying how the suspects came to discover the body. Guld will tell you that he was out for a daily run when he came across the body with Lusoff nearby. Lusoff will tell you that he was out hunting and nearly killed an iriaz when a sun glare screwed up his shot, after which he chased the creature and came across Guld standing over Calder's body. After this you will be able to talk to the droid for additional information, before returning to Bolook and telling him your findings.

Round Two

Now for the next round of questioning, which involves asking both suspects what their relationship to the victim is. Talk to them but they won't tell you much, except Rickard who says he didn't know the victim. Now talk to the droid who will tell you each suspect's relationship with the victim.

Rickard was business partners with Calder whereas Handon rented a speeder off of him. Return to Bolook and report your findings again, stating once again that Rickard is lying, since he lied about being business partners with Calder.

Round Three

Round three of questioning suspects in Murdered Settler involves the murder weapon. Just like before, talk to the suspects and Handon will surprise you by telling that his wife was cheating on him with the victim. Despite the clear motive, Handon pleads his innocence saying that his blaster was stolen recently.

Ask the droid about Handon's report of his blaster and he will tell you there is no report of a stolen blaster from Handon, meaning it wasn't stolen. Talk to Bolook again and this time tell him that Handon is lying and select the option that states he lied about the blaster being stolen.

Round Four

This is the last part of questioning where the big reveal shows itself. Talk to both suspects one last time and then the droid will tell you the blood analysis is completed, showing that the sample is heavily degraded but what is apparent is that the blood on the rifle is not Calder's.

Talk to Bolook one last time and he'll tell you that the blood belonged to the victim. Inform him of his mistake and then claim that the blood is Handon's, proven by his injured side. Bolook will check it out and discover that Handon is bleeding from a blaster wound, showing that the blood really was his. It is now the time to figure out who is really guilty.

The correct and final answer is that both men are guilty, and while Bolook will tell you that's a bold claim, it is actually the correct one. What happened was that both Rickard and Handon wanted Calder dead but Handon got to him first and killed him. Then Rickard, who was a good distance away, shot Handon mistaking him for Calder, causing the wound and prompting him to call the authorities.

Rewards For Completing Murdered Settler In KOTOR

Both men will be imprisoned and Bolook will thank you for help. For completing Murdered Settler in KOTOR, you will receive a hefty 1,310xp if you correctly solve the case finding both men guilty, which is a lot when compared to other quests in the game. However, you will instead obtain 470xp if you only find one of them guilty, or 570xp if you accuse both men but succeed to find only one guilty.
