Sonic 2’s New Trailer Includes A Chaos Emerald-Powered Robotnik And A Lot More Knuckles

Two years on from the very unexpected success of the Sonic movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now less than a month away. Paramount is so confident its next blue blur blockbuster will match the success of the first movie that it has already given the green light for not only at least one more flick, but also a Knuckles TV show coming exclusively to Paramount Plus. Speaking of Knuckles, the latest trailer shows us a lot more of the world's most famous echidna.

Paramount first revealed Knuckles would be a part of the next movie when Idris Elba tweeted nothing more than a close up of the character's clenched fist. That's right, if you hadn't already heard, Elba is the voice of Knuckles in Sonic 2. In previous trailers, Sonic has appeared to be no match for his new nemesis. However, in the latest trailer, which you can check out below, the hedgehog has found the perfect counter for Knuckles' ultimate power: speed.

Knuckles won't be the only problem Sonic has to deal with in his sequel, of course. Jim Carrey is back as Dr. Robotnik, and he appears to have been helped from the weird mushroom planet on which he was left by Knuckles. The chaos emerald Robotnik has found somewhere along the way has long been known to be a key plot point in the second movie, but rather than have it power his mechs as is the case in the games, movie Eggman appears to have absorbed the power himself.

That doesn't mean Robotnik doesn't need his mechs, of course. His iconic spherical ship can be seen front and center in the latest trailer, and a giant robot that appears to have been inspired by the boss you face at the end of the second Sonic game gets a lot of screen time. How exactly a hedgehog, a fox, and an airplane are going to be able to take it down remains to be seen but hey, we did it on the Mega Drive 30 years ago so they'll probably be fine.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits cinemas on April 8, 2022. There will likely be plenty more promotional stuff to whet your appetite between now and then, though. On top of the new trailer above, we've already had a shorter one packed with memes and the discovery of a new poster paying homage to Sonic 2 the game, and that's just in the last 24 hours.
