The Ver. 9.0.0 patch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has finally arrived, bringing brand new Minecraft characters to the game alongside a number of balance changes to the existing roster.
The latest patch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate predominantly focuses on buffs rather than nerfs. Several characters received much-needed buffs, most notably in the form of the Belmonts’ recovery moves and the general survivability of the Ice Climbers. A lot of the Flurry Attacks in the game have also been improved, as it was more difficult for faster characters to break out of them in order to prevent a KO.

The Ver. 9.0.0 patch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate adds Steve from Minecraft as a DLC fighter. If you purchased the second Fighters Pass, then he will be unlocked for free. Steve has skins based on Alex, a Zombie, and Enderman.
Steve comes with the Minecraft World stage, which features a number of random elements when selected. It’s possible to select a Biome for the stage with button commands that were recently revealed via Nintendo’s social media accounts.
The patch also adds a number of costumes for the Mii Fighters that can be purchased on the eShop. The new costumes include Travis Touchdown (Swordfighter) from No More Heroes; Bomberman (Brawler); the Creeper (Brawler), Pig (Brawler), and Diamond Armor (Swordfighter) from Minecraft; and Gil (Swordfighter) from Tower of Druaga.
Minecraft Spirits will now appear in the Shop and can be purchased with gold. These include Zombie, Creeper, Skeleton, Slime Enderman, Villager & Iron Golem, Ghast, Piglin, and Ender Dragon.
Donkey Kong – Buffed
Donkey Kong’s Headbutt Side Special now has more vertical range when hitting opponents that are on the ground.
Link – Buffed
The multiple hits of Link’s Up Smash now connect more reliably into each other.
Pikachu – Buffed
The multiple hits of Pikachu’s Forward Air now connect more reliably into each other.
Ness – Buffed
Ness received a number of buffs in the latest patch. The third hit of his Dash Attack deals more damage and launches enemies further, as does his Up Tilt. Ness’ Down Air is faster, his Up Throw deals more damage, and PK Flash is faster.
Captain Falcon – Buffed
The multiple hits of Captain Falcon’s Up Smash now connect more reliably into each other.
Ice Climbers – Buffed
Ice Climbers have received a number of buffs in the new patch, especially in regards to Nana.
Nana’s AI has been adjusted and improved, she takes less damage from hits and isn’t launched as far when struck. The Belay recovery move has been reworked so that the player can still use it even if Nana has used it, while its range has been increased. The Ice Climber’s Dash Attack has more range and its hits connect more reliably, while their Down Smash launches enemies further.
Sheik – Buffed
The multiple hits of Sheik’s Up Tilt now connect more reliably into each other.
Wario – Buffed
The multiple hits of Wario’s Corkscrew Special now connect more reliably into each other.
Charizard – Buffed
The multiple hits of Charizard’s Flare Blitz and Fly Specials now connect more reliably into each other.
Sonic – Buffed
Sonic received several buffs in the latest patch. Sonic’s Dash Attack deals more damage (but doesn’t launch any further), he’s not as vulnerable to counters when using Up Tilt, and the multiple hits from his Up Air connect more reliably. Sonic’s Up Smash is faster, has an easier time connecting its multiple hits, and he is invincible for longer when entering his ball form.
Lucario – Buffed
Lucario has received several buffs in the latest patch. The maximum strength of his Aura has been increased. The second hits of Lucario’s Neutral Attack and Down Smash are faster, the hits from his Side Tilt connect more reliably, he’s less vulnerable when landing after using Extreme Speed, and the Aura effect of Force Palm has greater launch distance.
Mii Swordfighter – Buffed
The multiple hits of Mii Swordfighter’s Hero’s Spin now connect more reliably into each other.
Shulk – Buffed/Nerfed
Shulk received both buffs and nerfs in the latest patch. The multiple hits of Shulk’s Up Smash connect more reliably and the launch distance of his Vision counterattack has been increased. On the other hand, when Shulk has his Shield Monado Arts activated he is launched further by enemy attacks.
Bowser Jr. – Buffed
Bowser Jr. received a number of buffs in the latest patch. His movements have been adjusted to prevent him from falling through platforms. Bowser Jr.’s Side Tilt launches enemies further, the multiple hits of his Up Smash connect more reliably, his Down Smash is faster, his Forward Throw launches enemies further, and his attack when coming up off the edge after recovering is stronger. Bowser Jr.’s Clown Kart Dash doesn’t flinch as easily when interrupted by an enemy attack, and Abandon Ship! is faster.
Ken – Buffed
The multiple hits of Ken’s Final Smash now connect more reliably into each other.
Ridley – Buffed/Nerfed
Ridley’s Flurry Attack has been altered (see below) but the hitbox of Wing Blitz now only affects enemies on the ground when used in a downward fashion.
The Belmonts – Buffed
The Belmont boys have received some much-needed buffs in the latest patch. Their Dash Attacks are stronger and launch further, their Up Tilt launches further, their Up Smash is faster and launches further, their Down Smash launches further, and their Uppercut has increased range.
“Flurry Attack To KO” Buffs
The patch notes refer to something called “Flurry Attack to KO,” which refers to a move that can’t be neutralized. This means that opponents cannot jab out of these attacks in order to interrupt the KO move. The characters who benefit from this change are Young Link, Meta Knight, Ivysaur, Robin, Bayonetta, Ridley, Simon, Richter, Piranha Plant, Banjo-Kazooie, and Min Min.
