Anyone going for a heavy armor build or a combat build that requires power attacks in Skyrim should focus all of their attention on their Stamina. A number of combat styles use Stamina, including dual wielding, two-handed power attacks, one-handed, as well as bashing with a shield. Moreover, Stamina also influences your carrying weight and how much you can sprint.
The heavier your build is, the more you’ll need Stamina, although light armor builds will also greatly benefit from it as long as they also rely on Stamina during combat. However, it can be challenging to ensure your Stamina doesn’t deplete in combat, which is why maximizing it to make a near infinite Stamina pool is the way to go. Here’s what to do to make sure you never run out of it.
Start As A Redguard
Every race in Skyrim has their unique abilities and bonuses. When it comes to Stamina and builds that rely heavily on it, Redguards are usually the ideal choice.
They have a special ability known as a unique race power. This power can be used once a day. Adrenaline Rush, when used, allows Redguards the regenerate their Stamina 10 times quicker for 60 seconds.
Activate The Lady Stone
The Lady Stone is one of the many standing stones located around Skyrim. This one specifically boosts the regeneration of Health and Stamina by 25% when active, making it ideal for builds that rely on Stamina. On top of that, you get a nice Health regeneration boost as well, which usually goes hand in hand with Stamina-centered builds.
The Lady Stone is located on Lake Ilinalta. From Riverwood, follow river that runs next to it towards west and you’ll eventually come up to a lake. The stone is located on a small plot of land in the middle.
Pray To Kynareth
Each Divine in Skyrim provides a variety of boosts and advantages when their shrines are activated. For Stamina builds, the go-to Divine is Goddess Kynareth, whose shrines can be found scattered all across Skyrim.
The two easiest locations are Kynareth’s shrine at the Temple of Divines in Solitude which conveniently features all Divines, as well as Kynareth’s own temple in Whiterun, on the left of the stairs leading to Dragonsreach. There’s also an amulet of Kynareth which can be found randomly in loot. It increases your maximum Stamina by 10 points.
Enchant Your Gear
If your build includes high levels of enchanting, consider making your own gear that significantly boosts your Stamina. There are three enchantments that are fantastic for maximum Stamina:
- Fortify Stamina: increases your maximum Stamina points
- Fortify Stamina Regen: increases the speed at which your Stamina regenerates overtime
- Absorb Stamina: drains Stamina from an enemy and transfers it into your Stamina pool
The first two are available for armor, while the last one is exclusive to weapons, and is particularly strong on a two-handed weapon.
Cooking is one of the best and most underrated ways to boost your Stamina. There’s multiple recipes that come in handy, but some of the best ones are:
- Homecooked Meal: regeneration of all three attributes is increased by 25% for 600 seconds. Only a spouse can cook it.
- Beef Stew: regenerates 2 points of Stamina for 720 seconds and increases maximum Stamina by 25. Made with garlic, salt pile, carrot and raw beef.
- Vegetable Soup: regenerates 1 point of Health and Stamina per second for 720 seconds. Made with tomato, potato, cabbage and leek.
- Venison Stew: gives 15 Stamina and regenerates 1 point of Health and Stamina per second for 720 seconds. Made with potato, salt pile, leek and venison.
Unlock The Right Perks
There’s a couple of great perks which can help you maximize your Stamina. In the heavy armor skill tree, you’ll want to get the Conditioning perk, which removes the heavy armor penalty on Stamina when sprinting.
In the light armor skill three, Wind Walker is an insanely powerful perk to unlock. When wearing full body light armor, your Stamina regeneration is faster by 50%.
Finally, in the Restoration skill tree a more niche perk allows Restoration spells to also restore some Stamina. Unlock Respite if you find yourself using Restoration spells and need the extra Stamina boost as well.
Get Unique Stamina Gear
While you can enchant your own Stamina boosting gear, it’s also great to know where to find unique pieces which will help keep your Stamina up consistently. The Dragonborn DLC’s Deathbrand Armor is great for this, as it boosts your maximum Stamina pool by 15 points for every piece of Deathbrand armor you wear.
The Nightingale armor rewarded during the Thieves Guild quest line increases your maximum Stamina by 40 points. To get the best version of this armor set, make sure not to complete the quest before reaching level 32.
Finally, there’s a Daedric artifact known as the Ring of Namira which adds an extra 50 points into your Stamina pool. To receive it, make sure to complete The Taste of Death quest in Markarth and side with Eola.
One dragon priest in particular has a mask that’s very powerful when combined with a Stamina build. Head south from Riften to a location called Forelhost and outside the location you’ll find Captain Valmir, a Thalmor disguised as a Stormcloak soldier. He’ll ask you to retrieve the mask for him.
Rahgot is a level 50 dragon priest and uses mostly fire spells to his advantage, so make sure to bring some Resist Fire potions along. The mask he drops increases your maximum Stamina by 70 points.
Never underestimate the power of alchemy in Skyrim. A few points in this skill tree will allow you to craft immensely powerful Stamina boosting potions. Here’s what they are and what ingredients you should look out for:
- Fortify Stamina: torchbug thorax, slaughterfish egg, garlic, large antlers, chaurus eggs, boar tusk, lavender
- Regenerate Stamina: scaly pholiota, fly amanita, mora tapinella, bee
- Restore Stamina: torchbug thorax, small pearl, wisp wrappings, pearl, pine thrush egg, powdered mammoth tusk, sabre cat tooth, salmon roe, silverside perch, orange dartwing, purple mountain flower, netch jelly, bear claws, bee, charred skeever hide, mudcrab chitin, histcarp, honeycomb, large antlers, eye of sabre cat, hawk beak
Invest In Stamina Attribute
The most obvious thing to do at the end of the day is make sure to put those points in your Stamina attribute. Whenever you level up, prioritize boosting your Stamina over other attributes.
This shouldn’t be too difficult to do, since Stamina builds rarely require any Magicka, which allows you to completely ignore that category and focus on Stamina first and Health second.
