Skate 4 is having a very strange development cycle. Unlike most games, Skate is bringing in testers extremely early on in the development process. What EA and Full Circle call a “pre-pre-pre-pre alpha” build has been played by a small group of testers, but also a growing group of Skate enthusiasts thanks to a leaked version of this build that is being spread online.
Motherboard reports that Skate 4’s early build is now being spread by a network of Discord servers. In addition, modders have even gotten the game’s multiplayer components to work and are sharing that information to allow Skate fans to play on personal servers.
A modder named Justice said that he gained “hella traction” after posting explainer videos of how to get Skate 4’s multiplayer working. Those videos have since been taken down, but they served to galvanize the eager Skate community, sharing the information within those videos so players can have the same early peek at Skate normally reserved for a select group of testers.
In its modded form, Skate 4’s multiplayer requires direct connections to servers set up by players, which involves sharing IP through this network of Discords. EA noted in a statement warning people away from this leaked build that direct connections to untrusted sources is a great way to get a virus.
"We’re aware of an earlier version of the game that has been distributed without our authorization," reads EA’s statement on the Skate blog. "This build is from September 2021 and was never intended for external use. While we understand you’re excited to get into the game, we encourage you to be careful when downloading files from unknown sources (and remind you of the potential consequences of breaking EA’s Terms of Service). The best way to get the chance to play is by signing up for skate.insider playtesting here as we continue to invite more and more players into the game throughout the year."
EA would prefer players not download this leaked and modded build of Skate, it hasn’t taken action against modders or players directly. In fact, one Discord moderator described an EA representative as “pretty calm” when they entered a server to check things out.
