PS5 Now Prompts You If You’re About To Play The PS4 Version Of Cross-Gen Games

After an early bout of confusion, PS5 will now notify you if you’re about to launch the PS4 version of a cross-generation game. Since launch, many users have been inadvertently installing and playing last-gen games without even knowing it.

While Microsoft was quick to implement its Smart Delivery system – giving Xbox One games a free upgrade to Series X – Sony didn’t offer a similar unified program for PS5. Almost all games ended up offering a similar free upgrade, but there wasn’t a unified approach instated by PlayStation. This led to a bit of confusion when it came to upgrading from PS4, as Sony was a bit behind the curve compared to its peer.

Even worse – some players were directed to PS4 game downloads instead of their PS5 counterparts. The only way to discover which version you were running was to dig through the menus and look up the information about the file on your hard drive. Earlier today, however, some users noticed a new pop-up on their PS5, giving them confirmation that they’re about to launch a last-gen game on the next-gen console.

The notification will hopefully solve all the issues players have been having since the launch of PS5. Running an old game on a new system isn’t the best way to show off the power of the next-gen system, and it’s great Sony is finally offering an easy fix. Something more along the lines of Smart Delivery would have been better, but this is a big step in the right direction.

If you’re looking to pick up some new games for your new system, Sony’s currenting running a massive Holiday Sale on the PS Store. Some of today’s most popular games are included in the promotion, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, Ghost of Tsushima, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. And – thanks to this new update – you can rest assured that you’ll be running the proper version of these cross-gen games.
