Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Gen 9 games out this year – starter pokémon revealed

The next generation of Pokémon games has been announced and it’ll be out this Christmas, with a free Pokémon Legends update today.

To the surprise of many, the new Gen IX Pokémon games were announced during a brief Pokémon Presents livestream on Sunday, with Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet scheduled for release later this year.

Although that will be three years since Pokémon Sword and Shield, which is a normal gap between one generation and the next, until Friday there were no reliable rumours that new games were coming this year.

There was very little concrete information but there was quite a bit of in-game footage, implying that it will be one giant open world area, in the style of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

On a technical level the graphics looked very similar to Pokémon Legends and while there was no official confirmation of what country it’s based on several areas seemed to be inspired by Spain, including Barcelona’s Park Güell and Sagrada Família.

The three starter pokémon have been revealed as a cat-like grass type called Sprigatito, a crocodilian fire type called Fuecoco, and a duck-like water type called Quaxly.

The three new pokémon, which are actually listed as ‘partner pokémon’, aren’t shown in action but several pre-existing critters are, including Lucario, Seviper, Magnimite, Pellipper, Stonjourner, Meowth, Psyduck, Hoppip, and Pikachu.

Showing so many previously established pokémon may be an indication that the game will feature a full national pokédex from the start, which Sword and Shield was heavily criticised for not having – although, again, there was no official confirmation either way.

The game certainly looks like Pokémon Legends but whether it will work exactly the same way, including its unique approach to battles, remains to be seen.

The other announcement during the Pokémon Presents is a free update for Pokémon Legends: Arceus called Daybreak, which adds new missions and outbreak species.

It will also add more trainer battles, which is something the original version had very little of, although they’ll still be limited to taking place at the Training Grounds.

Also announced was a download package of rare pokéballs, including ultra balls, gigaton balls, and jet balls. You can get it for free now and until 4pm GMT on March 31 if you use the password ARCEUSADVENTURE.
