Blizzard has promised more news on Overwatch 2 next year, as it unveils a new map for the current game that offers clues about the story.
It’s been over a year now since Activision Blizzard announced Overwatch 2, the sequel to its team-based multiplayer shooter, and there hasn’t been any new information since.
But while fans are still in the dark about it, game director Jeff Kaplan has promised that there will be Overwatch 2 news at the upcoming BlizzCon Online event taking place in February 2021.
This came from a recent developer update that primarily focused on a new map that’s coming to the original Overwatch in January.
Kaplan adds that Overwatch 2 is still the main focus for the development team and even teased that the new map, Kanezaka, has some environmental Easter eggs and foreshadowing for what’s to come in the sequel.
‘There’s a lot of contextual storytelling we’re doing in this Free For All map, with some Easter eggs, and some payoff that’s going to come in Overwatch 2′, he said.
Kaplan also acknowledges how long the wait for new Overwatch 2 info has been and suggests that the game is still a long way off from actually releasing.
‘Can’t wait to talk to you more about Overwatch 2. Can’t wait to show you more with Overwatch 2. We know it’s been too long. We know we’ve been quiet. And we still have a ways to go, just to manage expectations.
‘But we’re working extremely hard. We want this game to be great for you, both the live game and the upcoming sequel.’
As a reminder, Overwatch 2’s release doesn’t mean support will end for the first game. The plan is to essentially merge the two games, so any progress made in the first can be transferred to the second and they will continue to share content like new heroes and maps.
Overwatch 2 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
