Since launching last March, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold over seven million copies throughout Europe – making it the most successful European launch year for any Nintendo game.
What might be more impressive than the actual sales figures is the percentage of European Switch owners that also own a copy of Animal Crossing. “According to figures from Nintendo, the seven million sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons represents one-third of all Switch owners in Europe,” reports Games Industry. “The figure includes both physical and digital units.”
All told, New Horizons has sold over 31 million copies around the world, consistently showing up on best-sellers lists and finding a way to stay in the public eye. It might not garner the same sort of attention it did last year, but Animal Crossing is very much alive.
In fact, a massive patch is dropping on March 18, bringing with it the Custom Designer Pro Editor + and the Custom Designs Portal – letting you create elaborate designs for your umbrellas, flags, and more. There will also be a “limited-time web service” call the Island Tour Creator, that lets you put together a montage trailer for your island oasis.
As if that weren’t enough, there will also be a Sanrio cross-over on March 26, giving you a chance to bring characters such as Rita, Chai, and Toby to your town.
Until the new content arrives, those 31 million players are biding their time with the recently released Mario items – including functioning Warp Pipes. These let you quickly travel across your island by jumping into the iconic green tubes.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to thrive, and it’ll be interesting to see what the next year has in store. The attachment rate in Europe is no doubt impressive, and there are millions of dedicated Animal Crossing fans around the world that are still pulling weeds, selling turnips, and staying up late to go fishing. Its sales might slow down in the coming months – but that’s only because everyone already owns it.
