A report from Nikkei mentions a new Nintendo Switch model, which could be the long-rumoured Switch Pro, but Nintendo’s staying quiet.
There have been constant rumours of a more powerful Nintendo Switch, referred to by many as the Switch Pro, for over a year now and they have yet to bear any fruit.
Recently, something that sounds like it could be the Switch Pro was mentioned in a report by Japanese outlet Nikkei. As transcribed by VGC, it writes that Nintendo is ‘expected to add a higher-end model with higher image quality.’
A consistent feature about the rumoured model is that it will have an upgraded display and support 4K visuals, which would match up with Nikkei’s description.
The report also mentions that Nintendo has requested production of the Switch console to be increased to 30 million units for this fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2022.
Unsurprisingly, Nintendo is continuing to remain quiet on any potential new Switch model. A spokesperson for the company told Nikkei: ‘There is nothing we can tell you about production numbers and higher-end models.’
Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser downplayed the possibility of a Switch Pro during an interview last year, saying the company was more focused on the current hardware.
Of course, if the Switch Pro does exist, then obviously Nintendo would only reveal it on its terms. With it looking to have a rather substantial presence at E3 this year, some hope that then will be when it unveils the Switch Pro.
The Switch remains incredibly profitable for Nintendo, dominating the sales charts throughout 2020, no doubt in part due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown. It was even the best-selling console of the year.
