Nintendo Switch game gets the silly season off to a surprising start

New Nintendo Switch release Astral Chain has given the platform holder a surprise boost at the start of September.

Despite launching alongside numerous new multiplatform releases, Nintendo Switch exclusive Astral Chain has managed to top the all-format game charts in the UK.

Arguably coming as something of a surprise, Astral Chain charted above Man of Medan, Wreckfest and Control.

Perhaps even more surprising is that Control was the lowest-placed new entry, despite earning critical acclaim.

Astral Chain entered the game charts at number one, followed by Wreckfest in second, Man of Medan in third and Control in fourth.

According to sales tracker site UKIE, the battle was extremely close, with the gap between first and fourth separated by just 1,500 sales.

It was also a good week for Sony, as Marvel’s Spider-Man climbed back into the top-ten.

Express Online predicted big things for Astral Chain after seeing the game in action earlier this year.

Developed by Platinum Games, Astral Chain combines hack and slash action with detective elements.

The futuristic new release takes place in a huge city known as The Ark, where mysterious dimensional gates have appeared alongside dangerous alien creatures.

You play as a rookie “Neuron officer” in charge of investigating the alien threat, which you’ll do with the aid of a Legion – a kind of cyborg weapon that’s linked to you by a chain and nobody else can see.

Some Legions provide players with an extra sword in battle, others specialise in long-range combat and some can even be used to make a hasty retreat.
