Nintendo Direct March leaked: More Metroid Prime 4 and Pikmin coming soon?

Nintendo fans will no doubt be over the moon to have finally learnt something about the release of a Nintendo Direct coming this week.

Unlike the more general directs, this will focus solely on Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Nintendo confirmed the news on Twitter last night with a message that read:

“Tune in on February 20th at 2pm UK time for a roughly 25-minute livestreamed #AnimalCrossing: New Horizons Direct, featuring an in-depth look at Nook Inc.’s Deserted Island Getaway Package! #ACNH”.

With the next Nintendo Switch exclusive game due for release in a matter of weeks – on 20 March, 2020 – it makes sense holding a game-specific direct a month ahead of launch.

However, if you're not the biggest fan of Animal Crossing, but are keen to see what's coming next from Nintendo, it's arguably not the news you might have been hoping for.

As per VGC's research, it's now been the longest wait for a new Nintendo Direct since the Switch launched.

The last 'proper' Nintendo Direct – which focused on multiple games and not a deep dive into just one – took place in September 2019 and ever since fans have been craving more info.

Whilst unconfirmed, it's possible that the next direct could be coming early March, at least if you're willing to believe this now deleted, but possibly accurate, Reddit thread.

Assuming that the Reddit user was actually 'in the know' it raises the possibility of some rather tantalising news for Nintendo fans.

For one, we might actually learn something about Metroid Prime 4, a game that was scrapped last January.

At the time Nintendo general manager Shinya Takahashi announced that Metroid Prime 4 had been delayed, with development restarted under the supervision of Retro Studios.

Pikmin is also another big series which has been mysteriously absent from the Nintendo Switch despite being something of a fan favourite since it's original release on Gamecube back in 2001.

A fourth outing for the series has been in development for years but seemingly stuck in development hell.

In September 2015, Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed with Eurogamer that the next Pikmin game was in development, and was "very close to completion.", but fast forward nearly 5 years and it's still AWOL.

Hopefully the above 'leak' from Reddit is genuine and we might finally see the return for these two great Nintendo series once more in the near future.
