We're only one day into January 2020 and already the news in what is likely to be a key year for console gaming is staring to hot up.
Previously we had suggested that we could see a Nintendo Direct January 2020 stream because of the impending Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC.
We're still awaiting the annoucement of the 5th DLC fighter for the game, a character who is supposed to be available in February
Typically, Smash Bros characters are teased a little bit ahead of time – sometimes by a few months, sometimes weeks, occasionally they're shadow dropped on players without a moments notice.
Either way, a new Smash character in February and no information would suggest some sort of direct, likely in January.
However, some new information has come to light as we headed into 2020 which once again paints a picture to suggest some big Nintendo news is just over the horizon.

A report by Dot Esports suggests that Nintendo Switch version 10.0 could arrive as early as January 6th. That's Monday!
The news was revealed by some future maintenance coming next week which will see all network services switched off for "distrbution of update data".
The maintenance and update is scheduled to take place from Monday, January 6, 2020 8 :30 PM for one hour until Monday, January 6, 2020 9 :30 PM Pacific Time
This would also mean that players across the world would be unable to use the Nintendo eShop or play any games that require an online connection.
Many suggest this could be the long awaited release of the Nintendo Switch's new firmware.
That being said, given the secretive nature of Nintendo at the best of times, we doubt we'll know more until the day in question.
With that being said, the possibility of a big new firmware update – perhaps including new features and more for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite OS – would be the perfect time to hold a Nintendo Direct.
You know, so that Nintendo bosses could demonstrate new features alongside a flurry of new game announcments.
After all, 2020 is looking a bit bare for the house of Nintendo.
At the time of writing we're none the wiser on where we are with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, Animal Crossing is surely poised for a big marketing push with the release in March and other exclusives such as Metroid Prime 4 are likely very far away from being complete.
So if Nintendo has got anything to say, do or show, now would certainly be as good a time as ever to show it.
Hopefully we'll learn more in the coming days.
Either way, stay tuned for all your Nintendo Direct news.
