Square Enix has denied rumours of another new Kingdom Hearts games for Nintendo Switch but promised something for the 20th anniversary.
Considering there was a 14-year gap between Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3 it’s impossible to guess when Kingdom Hearts 4 will arrive, but director Tetsuya Nomura has implied that something big is on its way for 2022.
‘I’ve already shifted my thinking to the next instalment and the Kingdom Hearts team is already starting on something new’, said Nomura in a Famitsu interview translated by Twitter fan Audrey.
‘In regards to what we will announce from here on out, everything will probably surprise you, so please look forward to it!’
There were almost a dozen spin-offs and remasters between the release of Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3 though and the best bet is that the 20th anniversary release will be something more along those lines.
The news follows rumours that a new Kingdom Hearts game may be coming to Nintendo Switch, beyond just multiformat music game Melody Of Memory.
However, thanks to a recent interview with Nintendo Enthusiast we now know this is not the case, with Nomura revealing that ports of existing games were considered by they were found to be ‘technologically difficult’.
Nomura said that he would like to make a game on the Switch though and that it was possible other games he’s worked on could come to it eventually – although he stopped short of implying anything specific.
