The game that originally inspired Resident Evil is looking to make a comeback, as evidence of an abandoned remake also emerges.
Resident Evil did not invent survival horror. It invented the phrase ‘survival horror’, but the gameplay and visual style was copied wholesale from French game Alone In the Dark, which came out four years earlier.
The game was well-known at the time but the original, and best, entry was only on PC and while the sequel also came to PlayStation and Saturn it didn’t do so until after Resident Evil. As a result, it was never a big hit with console gamers and the final entry in the original trilogy went back to being PC-only.
There have been a few attempts to bring it back since, but none were ever a success, and yet rumours suggest that a new title is due to be announced this Friday.
