Naraka: Bladepoint is the massively-multiplayer action game where you’ll ring steel against other players in a mysterious Oriental land.
Imagine if Bayonetta, Assassin’s Creed, Warframe, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon all went into a motel room for a night of unrestrained hedonism. Nine months later, you’d get a game that looks like Nakara: Bladepoint. Probably. We don’t have a lot to go on, but that’s what the trailer looks like, anyway.
The game comes from Chinese development studio 24 Entertainment in what looks to be their first offering, although the studio says they’re “all veterans in the gaming industry.” Gaming is a big industry in China these days, so that could very well be the case.
Nakara: Bladepoint is described as an MMO action game that takes place in the mysterious realm of Morus, which is a “forsaken island of splendid landscapes as well as inexplicable enigmas.” Spooky. The oriental and Chinese influences of Morus are pretty obvious, with folks walking around with wide-brimmed hats and armor that make them look like foot soldiers from the Three Kingdoms era, only way fancier.
The game looks to sell itself on character movement. Parkour is just the beginning–you can climb walls, hang from ledges, or just catapult yourself forward through some unspecified means. Although it’s probably magic.
Combat also looks to be a cornerstone of Nakara: Bladepoint. The press release says it will have an “accessible combat system” and a unique blocking and parry mechanic. There’s no defense button, and “timing” is the key. This presumably means that your character has an auto-block function so long as they’re not attacking, but we’ll have to wait for more details to know for sure.
So far, the game is only coming out on PC via Steam sometime in 2020, but the developers said they’re working on getting onto consoles as well. You can sign up for the beta by becoming a “forerunner” on the Nakara: Bladepoint website. The official release date has yet to be set.
