My mid-life gaming crisis – Reader’s Feature

A reader tries to celebrate his 50th birthday by buying some retro gaming hardware and discovers the best solution is the good old PlayStation 3.

Having recently celebrated my Hawaii birthday (50) I have found myself pining for my youth.

Having never been interested in motorbikes or the need for a convertible sports car there was only ever going to be one route to revisit my past: gaming!

Being born in 1970 I have been so lucky to watch my hobby grow and change through the years, from my C64 and seeing Space Invaders for the first time right through to today with the upcoming new consoles and the fruition of decent VR.

So I have been looking at how best to replay some of my favourite titles over the years.

One option would have been modding, MAME, or Pandora Box. This was ruled out due to the legal issue and poor emulation.

Next, I considered the Capcom Home Arcade, brilliant piece of kit, looks amazing, but limited titles and price ruled it out.

My next thought was an Arcade 1-Up cabinet. The Star Wars one was very nearly purchased, but again, limited titles, space, and again price was an obstacle.

After all this consideration Mrs Bullman solved my dilemma by telling me, ‘You have plenty enough consoles already!’

As always, she is right! So I have dug out my PlayStation 3 and, after a bit of searching, I can now play all the following retro delights:

  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Atari Anniversary Collection
  • Tekken
  • Metal Slug
  • Streets Of Rage 2
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Mortal Kombat Kollection
  • House Of The Dead 3, 4, and Overkill (with the Move guns)
  • Time Crisis 4
  • Crazy Taxi
  • Golden Axe
  • Daytona USA
  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Namco Museum Essentials
  • OutRun
  • R-Type Dimensions
  • Prince of Persia Classic
  • Sonic CD
  • NBA Jam

But the icing on my 50th birthday cake is Capcom Arcade Cabinet and Midway Arcade Collection. Included in these collections are some of my all-time absolute favourite games: Spy Hunter, Defender, and the evil title that is Ghosts ‘N Goblins!

All legal, all in my new man cave on my new 50″ TV!

Thanks for your advice and reviews over the years, been reading since Teletext and your reviews are always spot on.

Here’s to another 50 years of gaming!
(If Mrs Bullman lets me!)
