MTG Arena Is Coming To Android Early Access On January 28

Wizards of the Coast had always intended for Magic: The Gathering Arena to go head to head with other mobile card games like Hearthstone and Gwent, but the company was certainly in no rush. After an extended PC Early Access period that began in 2017, the final product has been out for Windows since September 2019, and now over two years later it’s finally coming to Android.

MTG Arena will hit Android early access starting on January 28. It will come with full cross-play support so you’ll be able to play against other PC users now and against iOS users when MTG Arena launches there later this year. All cards and game formats available on PC will also be available on the mobile version, including the upcoming release of Magic’s Norse-themed Kaldheim expansion.

All that said, MTG Arena does have some minimum hardware specs that must be met in order for you to download the game. You’ll need to have at least Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), 4 GB of RAM, and OpenGL ES 3.0 graphics processing. Minimum chipsets can either be a Kirin 970, Snapdragon 845, or an Exynos 9810.

Since not everyone has an encyclopedic knowledge of their phone’s hardware, Wizards recommends that potential MTG Arena users have one of these phones as a bare minimum:

  • Google Pixel 3
  • Samsung Galaxy S9
  • Huawei Mate 20 Pro
  • Sony Xperia XZ2
  • OnePlus 6T
  • Asus ROG Phone II

Other recent Android devices will work too, so if you’ve got something from the past two years or so (that cost $400 or more) you’re probably good to go.

Wizards also recently held their preview event for Kaldheim in a 45-minute livestream that took place just yesterday. There were a ton of brand new cards showed off on the stream showcasing Kaldheim’s overall themes, which seem to be pretty focused on creature typings. Oh, and the Phyrexians are back, which is always neat.

Kaldheim comes out on February 5 and will be available on MTG Arena (including on Android) on the same day.
