Later this week will mark 30 years since the first-ever Mortal Kombat game's launch. That has got some fans excited that it might mean news on what's next for MK. However, its creator has thrown water on any burning hope that there will be news about Mortal Kombat 12 this week.
“We know a lot of you are excited about the next NRS game announcement & it will happen in due time,” Ed Boon tweeted. “But first it all about 30 years of Mortal Kombat. That's what we're going to celebrate and focus on. Our next game announcement will be separate from MK30 .”
So nothing about what's next for the Mortal Kombat series on October 8, but that doesn't mean there won't be anything at all for MK fans. It sounds like there's something on the docket to mark the occasion, Boon just wants everyone to temper their expectations ahead of the big day. The lack of Mortal Kombat 12 news might also mean NetherRealm Studio's next game isn't an MK title at all.
That's the take some people have run with following Boon's tweet. A few replies point to a non-Mortal Kombat game being NetherRealm's next project. Not just because there will be no news about it during this week's anniversary celebrations, but also due to the specific wording of Boon's tweet. That an announcement about what the studio is working on next will be separate from MK30, making sure not to refer to it as a Mortal Kombat game.
There have been mixed reports regarding what exactly NetherRealm is working on next. Some believe it could be Injustice 3, while the consensus does seem to be that it will be a new Mortal Kombat game. Boon actually asked fans what they'd like to see next from NetherRealm, putting feelers out for a potential Marvel vs. DC fighting game.
