After our brief dalliance into the past with The Brothers’ War, Magic: The Gathering Arena has decided to take the fight straight to the Phyrexians, with a plunge into the machine hells of Phyrexia: All Will Be One. With oil, poison, and compleated Planeswalkers everywhere, All Will Be One is a brutal set full of surprises.
Some of those surprises can be found in the Mastery Pass, which gives you dozens of rewards simply for playing the game. Here’s everything you need to know about both the free and paid tracks, and how best to make the most of your time in the Fair Basilica.
What Is The Magic: The Gathering Arena Mastery Pass?
Like most ‘service games’, Magic: The Gathering Arena has its own take on the battle pass, known as the Mastery Pass.
By completing quests, winning games, and levelling up, you can unlock a series of rewards. These rewards include booster packs, gems, gold, cards, and ‘card styles’ – extended-art versions of cards that appear as if they’re three-dimensional.
The Mastery Pass is separated into two tracks, the free pass that is available to every player, and the full pass that requires you to pay to unlock it. Unlocking the pass costs 3200 gems, or approximately $19.99 – with a few gems left over. Alternatively, you can pay 5400 gems to unlock both the pass and enough ‘Mastery XP’ to give you ten free levels.
When you pay to unlock the Mastery Pass, you will retroactively be given every reward you previously missed out on, depending in your current level. For example, if you complete the free pass first, then pay to unlock, you’ll be given an additional 50 levels of rewards straight away. This is the best way to ensure you’re getting your money’s worth – level up the free pass until you’ve maxed it out, then pay to unlock the full thing safe in the knowledge you won’t miss out on rewards.
Alongside the Mastery Pass is the Mastery Tree, a second set of rewards you unlock using Mastery Orbs earned in the regular pass. These rewards are all cosmetic, with card styles and avatars of all five Phyrexian Praetors up for grabs this time around.
The Phyrexia: All Will Be One Mastery Pass will run until the next set’s launch, which is March of the Machine in April.
How To Level Up The Mastery Pass
While you can pay 250 gems per level to boost your Mastery to anywhere on the pass, it is surprisingly simple to level up just by playing. All you need to do is complete the daily and weekly quests.
Daily quests are by far the most time-effective way of levelling up the pass. Each day, you will be given new quests to complete, such as destroying your opponent’s creatures or playing with certain colours. Fortunately, you don’t need to beat the quests that day – up to three quests can be active at a time, and they won’t go away until you’ve either completed them, or re-rolled the quest by clicking on it on the main menu.
However, it is heavily recommended that you beat all of your daily quests, as doing so will give you a massive amount of XP. Each daily quest will reward you with 750 gold and 500 Mastery XP, which, if you complete two per day, equates to one level every day, and enough gold for three booster packs every two days.
After daily quests, the Daily Wins and Weekly Wins are the next most efficient way of levelling up. Each quest tasks you with winning 15 times in the Play queue of a format like Standard or Explorer. Daily Wins rewarding you with 25 XP and 100 gold per win, and the Weekly a whopping 250 XP per win. These stack, too, meaning your first 15 wins of the week will reward you with 275 XP instead, for a total of 4125 XP.
While it is advisable to complete at least the Weekly Win for that 4125 XP, the Daily Wins don’t give you enough XP to be worth the effort. 15 wins every day is a serious time commitment, and for just 375 XP and 1500 gold, you’re barely making more than a single Daily Quest which can be finished in just one or two games. Treat Daily Wins are incidental XP while completing other tasks, rather than a main way of completing the pass.
The Phyrexia: All Will Be One Mastery Pass
Here is every reward you can unlock in the regular Mastery Pass for Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Like the last few passes before it, this one has 80 levels, each 1000 XP apart.
The free track includes 33 Phyrexia: All Will Be One booster packs, as well as five Mastery Orbs – which isn’t enough to complete a single track of the tree, but is enough to claim the first reward from all five colours.
Meanwhile, the paid pass offers a lot more, offering an additional 21 booster packs, 26 card styles, and, crucially, 1,200 gems – effectively giving you back a third of what you paid for the pass. You’ll also have access to exclusive cosmetics, like the animated Atraxa, Grand Unifier Exquisite Sleeves, and the Mite pets.

The Phyrexia: All Will Be One Mastery Tree
While completing the Mastery Pass, you’ll frequently be rewarded with Mastery Orbs that are used to unlock further rewards on the tree.
Aside from the five avatars, every reward here is a card style, and follows four the major cycles of the set, such as the Sphere lands, the Twilight cycle, and the five Dominus.
Fully completing the Mastery Tree doesn’t require you to finish the entire pass, though it does come close: your final Mastery Orb will be unlocked at level 78.
