The screenplay for Todd Phillips' blockbuster Joker, written by Phillips and Scott Silver, is now online for all to read. Not only does the script feature an introduction by the writers — detailing the tone of the film, its connection to the DCEU, and the year — but it has a few cut scenes with Sophie Dumond, Arthur Fleck's neighbor played by Zazie Beetz. The last we see of Sophie in the movie, she'd just walked into her apartment to find Arthur there – a man she barely knew. But Arthur had been imagining them together in a relationship for a few weeks, in a delusional state, split from reality. When he realized her feelings for him were all in his head, he left. But did he do anything to her (or her daughter) before we see him in the next shot? Did he kill her? It was a little mini-mystery fans chewed on for a while, fueled by the fact that Arthur was a staggeringly unreliable narrator. After the movie came out, Phillips' said that Sophie was alive, and that scenes cut from the film would have let viewers know it. In the script, we can now see what these moments were. The first happens on page 78, after Arthur kills Randall. He takes cash out of his wallet and then leaves the cash along with a note (to watch him on Murray Franklin) on Sophie's doorstep.
The next moment (on page 96) features Sophie herself, reacting in horror after watching Arthur kill Murray on TV.
Phillips noted that he cut Sophie's reaction moment specifically because it broke with the film's motif of always keeping things from Arthur's perspective. This would have been a moment away from Arthur and away from people he was directly dealing with.Joker dominated the box office this fall, becoming the first R-rated movie to gross over a billion dollars while also earning multiple Golden Globe nominations – including Best Motion Picture and Best Performance By an Actor in a Drama for star Joaquin Phoenix.
