This year’s BAFTA Game Awards will see Deathloop, Forza Horizon 5, Inscryption, and Ratchet & Clank competing for Best Game.
The Game Awards has established itself as the closest thing video games have to the Oscars but the second most prestigious award ceremony is probably the BAFTAs.
In previous years they’ve been accused of being biased towards narrative based games but there’s relatively little to argue about in the list of 2022 nominees, especially as Returnal – which was snubbed by The Game Awards, despite being our game of the year – has the joint largest number of nominations, along with It Takes Two.
It Takes Two was already game of the year at The Game Awards, while the other BAFTA nominees include Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart with a generous seven awards, Forza Horizon 5 on six, Deathloop on five, and Inscryption with three.
Surprisingly, the only category Metroid Dread is nominated in is the public vote, but then BAFTA tends to downplay Nintendo titles in general, perhaps because of their lack of storytelling.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Party Superstars are both nominated in the Family category, while Animal Crossing also picked up a nod in the Evolving Game category – even though Nintendo has already announced they’ve ended support for the game.
For no apparent reason the nominations for Best Performer and Best Supporting Performer weren’t announced today but the EE Game of the Year category was announced earlier in the week.
Unlike the other awards this one is voted on by the public, although BAFTA are still the ones who choose the nominations.
At least this does include Metroid Dread though, along with Chicory: A Colorful Tale, Deathloop, The Forgotten City, It Takes Two, and Unpacking.
