Remember the Tiger Electronics LCD handheld games? No? Well, Hasbro’s bringing four of them back anyway.
After a wave of 80s nostalgia, it’s beginning to look like companies are shifting their focus to those who grew up in the 90s. Only last year, virtual pet Tamagotchi got revived and now Hasbro wants to join in too.
Recently, the company announced that it would be re-releasing select Tiger Electronics’ LCD games. Back then, these were a quaint alternative for those who weren’t able to get their hands on a Game Boy and, though quite limited in what they offered, apparently did enough to make some people pine for those simpler days.
Only four are planned for release at the moment and each will come with a single game, ‘inspired’ by their respective original versions. And just like the old days, they won’t come with the required AA batteries.
The games in question are a bizarre mix, though. The first is Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (possibly to further capitalise on the blue blur’s recent movie success) and offers a much more basic alternative to the Mega Drive classic.
Next is an X-Men game titled X-Men: Project X, where you play as Cyclops (everyone’s favourite?) with occasional assistance from Wolverine.
Then there’s Transformers: Generation 2, which makes more sense given that that’s a Hasbro IP. This was long before the Michael Bay style movies, although the attempt to relaunch the original toyline with a range of new and repainted figures never really took off.
Finally, we have The Little Mermaid. With both Aladdin and The Lion King having their classic Mega Drive and SNES titles re-released last year, it kind of makes it look like poor Ariel drew the short straw.
At the time of writing, these games are exclusively available to pre-order at GameStop for $14.99 (nearly £12) each. There is currently no word on a UK release.
