A source on Reddit has shared details about the long-rumoured Harry Potter RPG, but it all sounds too good to be true.
Like a young wizard with a faulty invisibility cloak, Warner Bros.’ upcoming Harry Potter RPG has done a poor job of hiding itself.
Footage and information about the game leaked back in 2018, prompting massive interest from casual and die-hard Potter fans alike, but Warner Bros. itself never commented on it.
People continued to whisper about it, and it was reportedly finally going to be announced at this year’s E3 before the event was cancelled.
At this point, fans can only impatiently check their watches until WB spills the every flavour beans, but there’s no concrete sign that it will happen soon.
However, a recent Reddit thread, discovered by VG247 and claiming to have been written by a Warner Bros. marketing employee, details a very comprehensive list of details about the game, which is apparently titled Hogwarts: Dark Legacy.
Frankly, if true, it sounds like a pretty awesome game. Unfortunately, it sounds too awesome, which means there’s a very high possibility that it’s all made up.
The ‘source’ provides no evidence that anything it says is true and even most of the comments consist of doubt and distrust.
Possibly the biggest giveaway, though, is that it directly contradicts the previous leak. The original one came with a supposed marketing blurb that stated that the game would take place during the 19th century, long before the events of the Harry Potter books.
This new ‘leak,’ however, is claiming that it’s instead set after the books. In fact, it’s set so far in the future that Harry’s children have already graduated from Hogwarts.
There is always the possibility that things changed during development and the Reddit post does match up with the first leak in other ways, such as the darker tone, character creation, some sort of morality system, and the fact that you play as a fifth-year transfer student. But they could simply have copied these details from the previous leak and embellished the rest.
The features described here, though, could make for an interesting game. Fans have always wanted to experience actually attending Hogwarts and living their own student life, which this supposed game seems to provide.
While none of these features are necessarily impossible it does almost feel more like a wish list, mentioning romance options, four hub worlds, and a fully detailed Quidditch mini-game.
It even states that the game continues after your character graduates and you play as an Auror (wizard cop) solving crimes in the same vein as L.A. Noire, which sounds like an entirely separate game.
The claim that it will also incorporate the Nemesis system from Warner Bros.’ Lord Of The Rings games also seems like the leaker is just making things up as they go along.
The post ends by saying that we can expect a trailer of some kind in August, which at least seems believable.
But whether the details it reveals will match up with this supposed leak is another question entirely…
