Rockstar will be adding more missions to GTA Online that you can play on your own, although it still won’t be the GTA 5 DLC many hoped for.
It’s been over seven years since Grand Theft Auto 5 was first released, two generations of console ago, so it seems fair to imagine that, despite early expectations, there won’t be any new story DLC for it.
In terms of something equivalent to The Lost And Damned or The Ballad Of Gay Tony from Grand Theft Auto 4 that’s still the case, but Rockstar has promised that future content for GTA Online will be something you can play on your own.
The recent Cayo Perico update adds the game’s most complex heist yet but unusually it’s one you can complete on your own if you want, and that’s implied to be the template for more DLC in the future.
‘It’s something that’s been on our minds for quite some time and the community has been vocal about it,’ design director Scott Butchard told GQ. ‘It’s something we’re keen to carry forward.’
‘We want to respect teams and players who want to play co-op. But at the same time still allow solo players to still get just as valid an experience out of it. There’s perks to both,’ he added.
Why now, after so many years concentrating on multiplayer, is unclear but if it’s related to next year’s PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game that’s not mentioned.
‘I think going forward we’re going to inject more of that single-player element in there,’ is all Butchard is willing to say.
Similarly, when director of design production Tarek Hamad is asked whether Rockstar will continue to tell single-player stories he answers simply, ‘Absolutely’.
What form this new content may take is not mentioned but if any of this is meant to be an oblique reference to Grand Theft Auto 6 it’s not made clear and it really does seem as if they’re just talking about more GTA Online.
