GTA 6 might be some way off, but 2020 could bring some good news for fans

Rockstar Games released GTA 5 on PS3 and Xbox 360 over eight years ago, hitting shelves on 17 September 2013.

That's an awful long time for fans to wait for the next entry and as we've seen in recent months, anticipation around Rockstar's next Grand Theft Auto launch has pretty much reached fever pitch.

Despite this, GTA 5 continues to dominate the games industry chart and it's showing no signs of slowing down.

According to a report by Games Industry (Via RockstarIntel ), Grand Theft Auto 5 was the most digitally downloaded game in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia this past Christmas.

It was also the third most-watched video game of 2019, thanks in no small part to the games Diamond Casino & Resort update.

The game just refuses to go quietly into the night, but the question of a sixth entry in the series continues to remain a hot topic amongst console and Rockstar Games fans.

Previously we've been asking fans for their input in 2019 and according to the results of our poll, which has seen over 39,000 responses, 35% of people think the game is coming 2020.

When will GTA 6 release?

Is GTA 6 coming out in 2020?

Whilst we can appreciate that most fans think 2020 is the big year, we're sorry to say that we think the 35% of those who voted in our poll are most probably wrong.

It's believed that GTA 6 supposedly started production as far back as 2016, at least if you believe what one report by Tech Radar suggests.

However, typically Rockstar has always allowed themselves a huge gap between their announcment and release, even delaying the launch in most cases.

For instance, GTA 5 was announced on November 1st, 2011, but released roughly two years later. The same goes for Red Dead Redemption 2.

So we can't imagine Rockstar Games would simply stealth drop the game like that in 2020.

The bottom line, we don't think GTA 6 will release in 2020, but we do think this is the year we finally see some sort of confirmation from Rockstar Games that the game is in development. And we think they might also accelerate when they look to release.

Is GTA 6 coming out in 2021?

Again, we're merely speculating at this point, however, we think 2021 is the year when Rockstar Games could attempt to release a new Grand Theft Auto.

Even if Rockstar were to announce the game in 2020, it would require an accelerated development cycle we've not seen from the developer.

But it's clear the companies parent company, Take-Two Interactive, want to expedite the release schedules for their big propitiates.

Speaking earlier this year, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick praised the critical and commercial response to certain 2K releases, but also lamented the time it took to bring certain titles to market.

More specifically, Zelnick identified that games like Red Dead Redemption 2 – which enjoyed an eight-year development cycle – were probably in development 'too long'.

"[…] Our ability to engage with consumers on an ongoing basis has [resulted in] some less pressure on getting to market with an all-new title. But we find that intersection between the time it takes our creators to do the best work in the industry on the one hand, and what the consumer wants, recognizing that building anticipation is a good thing.

"And we believe in resting titles as a great thing. I was a real outlier 12 years ago when we said we don't think it makes sense to annualize non-sports titles, and now most people would agree. But I think eight years is probably too long."

So we think it's highly possible that Take-Two could look to make Rockstar Games expedite the time spent between a GTA 6 announcment and release.

As we've suggested previously, Rockstar might look to do this through having a shorter GTA 6 campaign .

"It's possible that games may be a bit shorter than they were in certain instances," Zelnick explained during the same interview.

"It's possible that the ability to deliver content on an ongoing basis for a long time after an initial release of a hit would mean that perhaps that initial release wouldn't be as long in terms of number of hours of gameplay as previously had been demanded in a world where that was all you were getting."

What Zelnick appears to be suggesting, is that future releases could be shorter, but supported more meaningfully long term, which in this instance would be GTA 6 Online.

A Tweaktown headline pretty much nails it, writing: "GTA 6 may be shorter than GTA V with more multiplayer focus"
