It’s guaranteed that the GTA 6 release date will skip the PS4 and Xbox One consoles, but there could be some great news on the horizon.

According to the latest reports, developers Rockstar Games plan to launch a series of Grand Theft Auto games on several platforms.

Remasters are reportedly being planned for GTA 3, GTA: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

From what has been shared so far, these games will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X Stadia and Nintendo Switch.

Surprisingly, the same games are reportedly coming to PC at a later time and Mobile platforms.

The PC port makes sense, and the added time suggests that this could be more than just a re-release.

But the games also coming to Mobile does put a limit on what could be achieved. The new report from Kotaku also lines up with what parent company Take-Two Interactive has confirmed is in the works, without mentioning the Grand Theft Auto franchise.

And CEO Strauss Zelnick has also shared his views on remasters, telling the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference:

“Remastering has always been a part of the strategy. We’ve done differently than the competition – we don’t just port titles over, we actually take the time to do the very best job we can making the title different for the new release, for the new technology that we’re launching it on.

“So, we improve the technology, we upgrade the visuals, and we make performance enhancements. And that’s why I think our remastered titles typically do so well.”

GTA Online: Rockstar Games tease The Cayo Perico Heist

According to Kotaku, the returning Grand Theft Auto games will be released during Autumn 2021.

Rockstar Dundee is in charge of the new project and is using Unreal Engine to offer both new and old graphics.

Before becoming Rockstar Dundee, the same team was called Ruffian Games, and which was founded in 2008.

Ruffian has worked on several big projects, including the Crackdown series, as well as Halo: Reach and the Halo Master Chief Collection.

Some of the team had already worked on Rockstar titles in the past, including games from the Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt series.

So while GTA 6 will be put beyond gamers sticking with PS4 and Xbox One consoles, they will be able to play a number of returning Grand Theft Auto titles.

Based on the most recent reports, Grand Theft Auto 6 isn’t expected to arrive until 2024, and without a significant drop in the performance of GTA Online, there is no reason to think things will speed up before then.

The next big date in the Rockstar calendar will be November 11, which is when GTA 5 and GTA Online arrive natively on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

And it seems likely that the company is betting on this new version pushing sales even further in the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
