Spirit Transmission is the main activity you’ll be doing in Ghostwire: Tokyo — yes, even more than fighting yokai. This will be your main source of Experience Points, and also a minor but still relevant way of earning meika, the in-game currency.
Despite the game giving a clear explanation of this system, we’ll give you some important details and nuances about this activity. So prepare your katashiro, located your closest payphone, and be ready to absorb some sweet spirits.
What Is Spirit Transmission?

Introduced pretty early in the game, you’ll discover that the streets and buildings of Tokyo are flooded with spirits. These are the spirits of the entire population of the city, which was wiped out after the initial plot point. It’s your duty to recover every single spirit trapped here and transmit them to Ed, a friend of KK who can help the spirits reach the other side.
To do so, you have to capture said spirits using a katashiro. This is a magic paper that lets you store spirits in it. You’ll unlock a few katashiro at the beginning of Chapter 2, after cleaning a story-related torii gate. Each katashiro will let you absorb one 'group' of spirits.
Each blue shape you see won't be a single spirit. They will be gathered in 'groups', and you'll receive a window telling you how many spirits you have gathered. There's a total of 240,300 spirits scattered through the whole city.

Once you have packed all of your special papers, you have to use a payphone to speak with Ed and ‘transfer’ him the accumulated spirits. The more quantity you send at once, the more Experience Points and meika you’ll receive.
You can stock up to 50 katashiro. Each one can be purchased for 3,000 meika in any convenience store.
How To Find Spirits

Where to find Spirits in Ghostwire: Tokyo? Well, pretty much anywhere. You basically can’t take two steps without finding a group of spirits floating around — at least during the first hours of your journey or whenever you explore a new landmark. They will be on avenues, alleys, inside buildings, above rooftops, and even in some other places.
Sometimes the spirits you find around will be ‘locked’ with afflictions. You can easily absorb them after making the hand seals shown on the screen.

For example, you can find spirits by cleaning corrupted sections of an area. These are tree-like objects that are black and create a hazard pool. You can clean them by shooting to their core, which is spotted when using Spectral Vision.
Another way of discovering spirits is with Containment Cubes. This is a limited event that will happen in some locations from time to time. Three unique cubes will be floating in the air with an HP percent; waves of Visitors will try to absorb them. You need to defeat all the enemies before the Containment Cubes' health reaches zero.
Then the spirits will be free for you to capture.
You can spot these cubes by checking the map and seeing green circles on it.
The Transmission Beads Explained

After finishing the game, you’ll unlock unique Prayer Beads called Transmission Beads. This is an equipable item that will let you skip all the payphone part of the Spirit Transmission process. Simply equip it from the ‘Inventory’ menu, and every time you absorb a spirit, it’ll be automatically transferred.
It’s worth mentioning that the amount of Experience Points and meika you can make will be limited by using this method — you’ll only get the amount per one spirit. This would be the same as going to the payphone after absorbing only one spirit. However, the more you absorb without the Transmission Beads doesn’t add any extra points (it just multiplies the amount), so use the method that you prefer.
