If you’ve been playing Genshin Impact since launch, then you’re almost certainly grinding away for more Adventure Rank experience as we speak. Once you’ve cleared through a good portion of the main story quests the difficulty can start ramping up, and it gets to the point where you must have the very best equipment possible in order to survive the trials ahead.
Artifacts are a huge part of that. You might find it easy to mostly ignore artifacts as you start the game, but before you know it enemies will be doing more damage, and it will demand that you have a better set of artifacts than ever before. If you still don’t know what artifacts are best for you, just glance at our guide below and you’ll know everything you need to about artifacts in Genshin Impact.
Types of Artifacts in Genshin Impact
Each of your Genshin Impact characters can equip five different artifacts, one of each kind, and each kind gives a buff to one of your stats, in addition to some extra effects. The types and associated stats go as follows.
- Flower – HP
- Feather – ATK
- Timepiece – HP
- Chalice – DEF
- Crown – DEF
At the most basic level, you want to give your team the artifacts that give them the best boosts to their stats, depending on the kind of role you want them to aim for. In addition to the basic buffs, rarer and enhanced pieces will offer greater effects, such as extra ATK, DEF, HP, CRIT, and more.
Artifact Set Bonuses in Genshin Impact
Looking at the base stats is a good place to start, but once you start getting deep into the game you need to focus on achieving set bonuses. Each artifact you earn belongs to a set, and the more pieces of that set you equip to your character, the more powerful the effects granted to you by the set bonus. You can take a look at our list of the ten best artifact sets here.
There are five artifacts in each set, one for each type of artifact, but set bonuses actually max out at four pieces. For example, the Gladiator’s Finale set offers your characters an extra 18% ATK once you’ve equipped two pieces of the set, but equip four and it adds a bonus 35% damage to normal attacks for claymore, sword, or polearm users. This is the best set for melee DPS builds by far.
Mixing and Matching Artifacts in Genshin Impact
As mentioned, you only need two pieces of any artifact set to get your initial two-piece set bonus, and since you can equip five types of artifact you can actually equip two separate two-piece set bonuses.
For example, if you only managed to find two or three pieces of the Gladiator’s Finale set and you’re still searching for a fourth, you could always use your remaining two slots for a different two-piece set, like the Noblesse Oblige. This would set you up with +20% ATK from the Gladiator’s Finale set, and then +20% Burst damage from the Noblesse Oblige set – not a bad combination for any element-heavy DPS build.
