Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition’s Multiplayer Will Be Region-Locked

Square Enix is working hard to make Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition as unappealing as possible, as the online multiplayer in the game will be region-locked.

The original version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003, and it had one of the steepest barriers to entry for its multiplayer, as each additional player required a Game Boy Advance and a link cable in order to join in. When Square Enix announced that the game was being remade for modern systems as Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition, they were excited to think of the possibilities that online functionality could bring to the game.

The deal just keeps getting worse for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition. It was recently revealed that the game wouldn’t feature any local co-op at all, despite that being one of the big draws of the original game. It has now been revealed on the official website for the game that the online multiplayer modes in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition will be region-locked.

*In online multiplayer mode, a player will only be matched with others in the region specific to player’s software.

This is disappointing news, as it limits the ability to play with friends on the other side of the planet. It’s especially frustrating, as Square Enix went to the trouble of implementing cross-play between the mobile, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 versions of the game, yet it has added a harsh restriction in who people can play with.

The original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was a tricky game to enjoy, due to the high barrier of entry in terms of hardware and situation. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition had the chance to remove these issues and give fans around the globe the chance to enjoy the game as it was originally intended, but Square Enix keeps throwing up roadblocks that detract from our excitement for the game.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition will be available on August 27th on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, iOS, and Android.
