EA and FIFA have returned to the number one spot in the UK as the fallout from Back Friday resets the top 10 sales chart.
With not a single major new game to be released at retail this month, the UK sales charts are being dominated, not by new games, but by cheap ones.
That started this week with the results of Black Friday turning the charts upside down and allowing FIFA 20 to float back up to the top, since, compared to Call Of Duty and Star Wars, it was the subject of more discounts and console bundles.
That’s also why Sea Of Thieves and the Xbox versions of Minecraft have also shot up the charts, with PlayStation VR Worlds also coming in at number 14, Astro Bot at 18, Skyrim VR at 20, Resident Evil 7 at 23, and Everybody’s Golf VR at 25.
Overall though, according to GamesIndustry.biz, Black Friday sales were down 22% on last year, which makes sense given the lack of new releases (nothing came out last week, compared to Red Dead Redemption 2 and Battlefield 5 last year) and the fact that in general there were less bargains on a smaller range of games.
1.3 million physical games were sold last week in the UK and, as you’d expect, the PlayStation4 led the pack with almost 500,000 games sold (down 37%). The Xbox One was on 413,112 (down 26.7%), and the Switch on 361,967 (which despite less discounts than the other formats was up 44% on last year).
Most retailers are continuing their Black Friday deals until at least today but since Cyber Monday is irrelevant to the retail charts it’s going to be interesting to see how things shake down next week.
As ever, the most likely outcome is that, since it’s released later in the year and is therefore slightly newer, Call Of Duty will be number one for the majority of the month, but Star Wars may get a boost just before Christmas when the new movie comes out.
