Everything you need to know about NBA 2K21

The release of the Xbox Series X and the Playstation 5 mean that 2020 could be one of the biggest years in gaming history.

Basketball fans are licking their lips at the thought of the NBA 2K games – seen by many as the best and most in-depth sports franchise on the market – making their way to next-gen.

2K Sports have pulled away from EA’s NBA LIVE franchise with their amazing career mode which has gotten better year after year.

NBA 2K20’s MyCAREER is the best story mode to come out of a sports game ever.

2K Sports partnered with LeBron James owned production company SpringHill Entertainment for this year and it was staggeringly good, especially when you consider the multitude of flaws the Madden and FIFA career modes have.

Idris Elba’s cameo as your coach was particularly cool and we’re hoping for an ever bigger and better career mode in 2K21.

It wasn’t a game without its faults however, and fans will be pleading for an end to all those annoying microtransactions.

Here’s everything you need to know about the next game in the 2K franchise.

When’s the NBA 2K21 release date?

Like all of the sports games to be released later this year, no one can be certain of an exact release date.

However, going on previous titles, it’s fair to assume 2K21 will release in early September 2020.

The game will be announced soon after the NBA Finals are over, so expect more details and a teaser tailer to drop around July.

Will NBA 2K21 be on the next-gen consoles?

Excitement is growing for the Xbox Series X and the Playstation 5 consoles.

We’ve been waiting ages for a next-gen of consoles to be released, and we’re getting closer to their release.

The expected release date for those consoles is December 2020, so NBA 2K21 will have already been released.

It’s safe to assume 2K Sports will want their flagship game on the new consoles when they are released, meaning that NBA fans will get to play their favourite game in ultra high definition.

Will NBA 2K21 be cross-platform?

Cross-platform gaming has become a huge talking point in recent years.

The success of Rocket League and Fortnite as cross-platform games and most recently the latest Call of Duty game has broken down barriers in the gaming industry.

Gamers are now wondering if their favourite sports titles could be the next big games to go cross-platform, including NBA 2K21.

There is a possibility it could happen, albeit a slight one, but its definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Who will the cover star be?

2K Sports usually release a standard edition and a legends edition, each with their own cover star.

2K20 had Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis for the standard and NBA great Dwayne Wade, who played in the NBA’s first ‘Big Three’ with Chris Bosh and LeBron James.

  • Kobe Bryant honoured by LeBron James in emotional speech ahead of Lakers loss

The tragic death of Kobe Bryant lead to 2K fans clamouring for the legend to be the cover star for the next NBA 2K game.

It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Mamba on the legends edition, and would be fitting as he is surely one of the greatest to ever play the game.

As for the standard edition, we’re expecting one of the two biggest young stars in the league – New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson or Dallas Mavericks’ Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic to appear on the cover.
