Fortnite‘s three-day Winter Royale is a little more than a week away. Here’s everything you need to know about what will be a very different tournament to the norm.
Fortnite players, it’s time to put your competitive hats back on. Epic has announced that the game’s Winter Royale is returning. The three-day event begins on December 20, 2019, and will run through until December 22, 2019. The Winter Royale will be different from any Fortnite tournament that has come before it due to Epic’s complete overhaul of the scoring system. (More on that later.)
One of the reasons players are excited for this year’s Winter Royale is due to the return of competitive Duos. The tournament will be for teams of two and if players are feeling a little rusty in that area, Arena Duos is now open across all platforms. This is strictly for practice purposes and will have no bearing on placement or qualification for the Winter Royale.
Anyone and everyone can compete in the Winter Royale and there will be $15 million in total up for grabs. That prize money will be split across the three days, the different platforms, and different regions. PC players will compete together, mobile and Switch players will be grouped, and so will teams playing on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Now for the aforementioned controversial scoring system. There will actually be three different systems, one for each day and each one will benefit a different type of player. On day one, Duos will get 15 points for a Victory Royale and one point for every elimination. On day two, any Duo that finishes in the top 50 will receive points, plus five points for each elimination. On the final day, a top 12 finish will be needed to receive points and it’s back down to one point per elimination.
The Winter Royale will run for four hours each day and allow Duos to compete in a maximum of fifteen rounds each, so no grinding for 24 straight hours with the hope of winning big. All there is to do now is practice, practice, practice. All are welcome and who knows? You might perform well enough to land yourself a cool cash prize just in time for the holidays.
