Diablo 3: The Best Demon Hunter Builds, Ranked

If physical damage is your favorite thing about Diablo 3, then it’s not a wild guess to suggest your favorite class is the Demon Hunter. While Wizards are much more subject to the phrase “glass cannon,” it’s actually the Demon Hunter that gets killed on hardcore runs before any other class in the game.

That number, of course, is largely due to headstrong rookies that aren’t prepared for the difficulty of the game and do not understand how to truly utilize the Demon Hunter. These builds have been battle-tested through the highest-level rifts in the game, so if you want to be one of the experts and not part of the problem, take a look at these ideas that walk the talk.

10 10 – Rain of Vengeance

  • Active skills: Entangling Shot (Justice is Served), Rain of Vengeance (Anathema), Smoke Screen (Special Recipe), Strafe (Drifting Shadow), Fan of Knives (Pinpoint Accuracy), Vengeance (Dark Heart)
  • Passive skills: Single Out, Ambush, Cull the Weak, Night Stalker
  • Key Armor Sets: Natalya’s Vengeance, Bastions of Will
  • Key Weapons: Natalya’s Slayer, Dawn
  • Augment: Dexterity
  • Gems: Dexterity
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, All Resistance, Area Damage

Especially when on your own, getting overwhelmed can be a huge drawback to the Demon Hunter. That problem disappears with the Rain of Vengeance build as it slows oncoming traffic and subjects them to tons of group damage.

9 9 – Grenade

  • Active skills: Grenade (Cluster Grenades), Vengeance (Dark Heart), Companion (Boar Companion), Fan of Knives (Bladed Armor), Vault (Tumble), Preparation (Invigoration)
  • Passive skills: Grenadier, Numbing Traps, Cull the Weak, Awareness
  • Key Armor Sets: Unhallowed Essence, Endless Walk
  • Key Weapons: Fortress Ballista, Dawn
  • Augment: Dexterity
  • Gems: Dexterity
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, All Resistance, Area Damage

Grenades might not be the hardest-hitting weapon in your arsenal, but they create a great deal of mayhem and greatly increase your survivability. If avoiding death is your biggest concern, give this build a try.

8 8 – Cluster Arrow

  • Active skills: Entangling Shot (Justice is Served), Vengeance (Seethe), Companion (Bat Companion), Cluster Arrow (Cluster Bombs), Vault (Tumble), Sentry (Polar Station)
  • Passive skills: Numbing Traps, Custom Engineering, Cull the Weak, Grenadier
  • Key Armor Sets: Embodiment of the Marauder, Endless Walk
  • Key Weapons: Manticore, Bombardier’s Rucksack
  • Augment: Dexterity
  • Gems: Dexterity
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, All Resistance, Resource Cost Reduction

The burst damage against groups with the Cluster Arrow is already the stuff of fairy tales. This build utilizes the Sentry ability so that the single target damage is just as thrilling.

7 7 – Multishot

  • Active skills: Evasive Fire (Focus), Preparation (Invigoration), Vault (Tumble), Multishot (Arsenal), Vengeance (Seethe), Companion (Wolf Companion)
  • Passive skills: Ambush, Thrill of the Hunt, Cull the Weak, Ballistics
  • Key Armor Sets: Unhallowed Essence, Bastions of Will
  • Key Weapons: Yang’s Recurve, Dead Man’s Legacy
  • Augment: Dexterity
  • Gems: Dexterity
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, All Resistance, Area Damage

The Multishot build was always considered a build exclusive to early-game and leveling up. But with the new weapons that have been added in recent patches, Multishot is now squarely in the mix for the most competitive builds.

6 6 – Shadow Impale

  • Active skills: Impale (Ricochet), Vengeance (Dark Heart), Vault (Tumble), Companion (Wolf Companion), Fan of Knives (Bladed Armor), Shadow Power (Gloom)
  • Passive skills: Ambush, Numbing Traps, Cull the Weak, Awareness
  • Key Armor Sets: The Shadow’s Grasp, Endless Walk
  • Key Weapons: Karlei’s Point, Holy Point Shot
  • Augment: Dexterity
  • Gems: Dexterity
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, All Resistance, Area Damage

Daggers are still very much a competent way to conquer high-level rifts. The Shadow’s Grasp combines with a dagger and a quiver to make Impale go from good to legendary.

5 5 – Sentry

  • Active skills: Evasive Fire (Focus), Companion (Spider Companion), Sentry (Polar Station), Cluster Arrow (Loaded for Bear), Vengeance (Seethe), Rain of Vengeance (Flying Strike)
  • Passive skills: Cull the Weak, Single Out, Custom Engineering, Steady Aim
  • Key Armor Sets: Natalya’s Vengeance, Embodiment of the Marauder, Endless Walk
  • Key Weapons: Natalya’s Slayer, Bombardier’s Rucksack
  • Augment: Dexterity
  • Gems: Dexterity
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Critical Hit Damage, All Resistance, Resource Cost Reduction

In most builds, the Sentry acts as an assistant, but it shines as the star of the show. Not only does it apply a slow to help with survivability, but its critical damage with the right gear melts even the toughest enemy units.

4 4 – Rapid Fire With Natalya’s Vengeance

  • Active skills: Rapid Fire (Bombardment), Companion (Boar Companion), Rain of Vengeance (Dark Cloud), Smoke Screen (Vanishing Powder), Vault (Tumble), Vengeance (Dark Heart)
  • Passive skills: Cull the Weak, Grenadier, Ambush, Awareness
  • Key Armor Sets: Natalya’s Vengeance, Aughild’s Authority, Endless Walk
  • Key Weapons: Dawn, Sin Seekers
  • Augment: Dexterity
  • Gems: Dexterity
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, All Resistance, Area Damage

The build is technically called Rapid Fire, but don’t neglect the huge bonuses to Rain of Vengeance either. The two combine to overwhelm groups of enemies from two fronts.

3 3 – Rapid Fire With Legacy Of Dreams

  • Active skills: Rapid Fire (Bombardment), Companion (Wolf Companion), Fan of Knives (Bladed Armor), Smoke Screen (Vanishing Powder), Shadow Power (Gloom), Vengeance (Side Cannons)
  • Passive skills: Cull the Weak, Grenadier, Ambush, Numbing Traps
  • Key Armor Sets: None
  • Key Weapons: Dawn, Sin Seekers
  • Augment: Dexterity
  • Gems: Dexterity
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, All Resistance, Area Damage

Perhaps no class benefits more from having freedom over which items they choose than the Demon Hunter. Legacy of Dreams gives you a bonus to avoid getting involved in all of those pesky sets and allows players to focus on what is best for them.

2 2 – Hungering Arrow

  • Active skills: Hungering Arrow (Devouring Arrow), Companion (Wolf Companion), Fan of Knives (Bladed Armor), Strafe (Drifting Shadow), Shadow Power (Gloom), Vengeance (Dark Heart)
  • Passive skills: Cull the Weak, Numbing Traps, Archery, Ambush
  • Key Armor Sets: Gears of Dreadlands, Bastions of Will
  • Key Weapons: Dawn, Balla’s Bequest
  • Augment: Dexterity
  • Gems: Dexterity
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, All Resistance, Area Damage

The Hungering Arrow build isn’t the heaviest damage dealer, in fact, it would rank quite low on this list if damage were the only metric. The advantage of the build is that it enables you to focus almost exclusively on survival. The damage will come naturally in the form of 10,000% damage boosted passive homing arrows that pierce enemies for single target and group damage.

1 1 – Support

  • Active skills: Bolas (Freezing Strike), Multishot (Wind Chill), Companion (Wolf Companion), Strafe (Drifting Arrow), Smoke Screen (Displacement), Entangling Shot (Heavy Burden)
  • Passive skills: Awareness, Blood Vengeance, Tactical Advantage, Numbing Traps
  • Key Armor Sets: Gears of Dreadlands
  • Key Weapons: Leonine Bow of Hashir, Emimei’s Duffel
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Vitality
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, All Resistance, Resource Cost Reduction

Disables on top of disables is the name of the game for the best Demon Hunter build in the game. When working in a group, this build is unquestionably the best as you’ll still deal moderate damage but, more importantly, you’ll keep enemies in a perpetual state of being unable to move.
