Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 rumoured for Steam release

Five years after Call Of Duty games stopped releasing for Steam, fans suspect that Modern Warfare 2 is breaking the trend.

Officially, we don’t know which platforms Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will release for, but thanks to a recent datamine, it’s safe to assume that it will come to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, as well as PC.

Interestingly, however, it’s now suspected that the PC version will break a five-year trend and release on Steam.

Recently, Modern Warfare 2 artwork (specifically the new art of the character Ghost) was spotted on Steam, at the bottom of DLC pages for various Call Of Duty games.

This is something of a big deal for long-time fans of the series as Call Of Duty games haven’t released on Steam since 2017. The last entry to do so was Call Of Duty: World War 2.

Starting with 2018’s Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4, the series became exclusive to Activision’s own Battle.net service and none of the games since then have been ported to Steam.

The artwork in question has been removed, but someone saved it for posterity’s sake on Reddit. As such, it’s unclear whether it was removed for leaking info ahead of schedule or simply because it’s an error.

While the possibility of a Steam release has some fans excited (especially those who never liked using Battle.net), others are a bit more sceptical and suspect that you’d still need to use Activision’s service after installing the game through Steam.

Considering how intrinsically tied Modern Warfare 2 will be to the upcoming Call Of Duty: Warzone sequel, it’s very likely that should the former come to Steam, so will the latter.

As for why Activision might be ending its Battle.net exclusivity, some think it’s a result of its acquisition by Microsoft. Whether this means Activision will retroactively add previous Call Of Duty games to Steam as well is another question entirely.

Also, it’s worth pointing out that the acquisition hasn’t happened yet and there’s still a small chance it never will.

Regardless, we will probably learn official release platforms very soon. It’s widely rumoured that a proper reveal is scheduled for June 8, with more details to follow during Summer Game Fest.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 releases on October 28.
