These are the big stories for Southeast Asia in the month of September, in collaboration with AFK Gaming.  

Razer lobbies for inclusion of esports in SEA Games 2021

Singaporean electronics and hardware brand Razer has taken the lead to bring together various national esports federations to lobby for the inclusion of esports in SEA Games 2021. Esports was a part of the event in 2019 but has been axed by the organizing country, Vietnam, which has cited budget concerns as the reason.

Razer’s CEO David Tse said in an interview We have also partnered with the Vietnam Esports Federation to guide them and support on the evaluation process, and have pledged our commitment to assist with the necessary resources to successfully implement the esports event, taking this medal esports event to the next level for SEA region and globally towards our vision at Olympics.”

SEGi College, EVOS Esports and FSA to develop esports content creation course

One of Malaysia’s largest private education providers, SEGi, has formalised an esports content creation course in partnership with EVOS Esports and FSA Esports Management Academy.

It is reported to be a comprehensive six-week course, aiming to equip students with the skills and knowledge to carry out professional content planning, creation and roll-out for esports. They will also be exposed to basic pre and post-production techniques including editing, shooting, talent management and marketing.

Esports startup Ampverse closes pre-Series A round for regional expansion

SEA-based esports startup Ampverse announced a pre-series A funding round. The company did not disclose the financial details of the deal.

Ampverse is involved in multiple verticals in the esports space and describes itself as a media firm. The funding will be used to expand operations in Southeast Asia.

Team SMG formalises one-year apparel deal with Under Apparel

Singaporean esports organization Team SMG penned a one-year deal with American performance apparel brand, Under Armour.

The deal will see Under Apparel become SMG’s official apparel provider. The deal covers all of SMG’s lineups which include rosters in PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Valorant based out of Singapore and Malaysia.

PeSO gets nod from the POC to act as Philippines’ national governing body

PeSO (Philippines Esports Organization) was given the nod by the Philippines Olympic Committee (POC) to become the National Sports Association to develop and govern esports in the country. POC President Abraham Tolentino also inducted PeSO as an associate member.

AFK Gaming is India-based esports media and content company that aims to provide quality and consistent coverage about teams, players, tournaments and competitive video games with a primary focus on the Asian region.
