The end of an era: Maybe departs from PSG.LGD

September 4, 2020 is setting up to be one of the saddest days for the PSG.LGD fans. Following the official announcement of fy’s departure, the organization had to also wave goodbye to their star player Lu “Somnus/Maybe” Yao.

Maybe departs from PSG.LGD after seven years of unforgettable memories, incredible achievements and inspiring TI moments. Coming to LGD in 2013 after he finished his studies, Maybe grinded his way into the competitive scene via the most prestigious in-house league in China, the Chinese Dota Elite Community (CDEC). He was initially recruited straight into the main LGD team, but shortly after he was transferred to CDEC Gaming. He spent a few months there polishing his playstyle before returning to the main team, where he had to fill in the big shoes left behind by Zhang “xiao8” Ning.

Through his long run in the LGD and PSG.LG jersey, Maybe rose from a top MMR player to one of the best mid laners in the world. His fearless attitude regardless of the opponent brought PSG.LGD countless of trophies, propelled them to a top three finish on The International stage in 2015 and 2019, a top four finish in 2017 and in 2018 Maybe fought in the PSG.LGD t-shit in what can easily be regarded as the best TI grand finals.

Maybe departs today from PSG.LGD as a free agent, much like his teammate fy. “With respect for the personal will of the player and his needs for career development, thorough internal communication and multilateral friendly negotiations, we are sorry to announce that our contract renewal with Maybe wasn’t successful, and he is now a free agent,” the organization announced on its official Weibo page.

In an era where all stars were shining, you were the brightest among all, “said PSG.LGD in their goodbye post for Maybe and added:

“When we first met you, you were the widely-praised young talent with the highest MMR on the Leaderboards;

At TI5, the Ember Spirit in the comeback game made your name known to the whole world;

At Manila Major 2016, with Invoker and Tinker, you presented us with the most dominating show in the professional scene, recognized by audience inside and outside the community;

At TI8, the Storm Spirit flashing in and out of the Black Hole was incredibly stunning;

Whenever you were in the mid lane,  we felt safe and relieved.

Somehow, LGD and Maybe became synonymous.

What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.

Great attention is usually accompanied by more responsibilities. With a distinct personality, you were always the main topic for  the community since your debut, but you were never afraid.

They say you were overpraised, but you staged a comeback after one year in CDEC;

They say you don’t learn or practice, but your ranked MMR and your professional achievements are the best proof.

They say you are arrogant, but you responded it with your famous line, “Why play in the professional scene if you don’t have confidence in yourself?”;

They say you are the bully in the team, but taking care of your teammates all the time shows how responsible you are;

Finally, they say you are the face of CN DOTA, and you are worth it!

With all the achievements made in the professional scene, you also lead a fruitful life. We witness how you turned from a young boy into a man who’s getting married. We both grew through the 7 years together.

Even the finest feast comes to an end sometimes, the highlights in those years will always be remembered. Not only have you achieved yourself in the professional scene, you also left your own marks in the history of LGD Esports club. Thank you for all the efforts and contributions you’ve made to the team. We sincerely wish you splendid prospects in your future career.

Run proud, boy!”

Along with fy, Maybe is rumored to continue his career this year with a new competitor entering the professional Dota 2 scene. Four Angry Men (4am), China’s most famous PUBG team, has already announced their intention to enter the Dota 2 field and their starting line-up is rumored to be more of a China all-star roster featuring some of the best players that have graced the game. No official announcements were made just yet regarding the next chapter into Maybe’s and fy’s careers, nor about the new possible line-up of PSG.LGD, so stay tuned for further updates.
