Dragon-type Pokémon are always among the most strong and popular creatures the Pokémon franchise has to offer. Pokémon Sword and Shield brought back plenty of them, so let’s take a look at the best Dragon Pokémon in the games.
Here are our five best (excluding Legendary Dragon Pokémon), along with what makes them a cut above the rest.
The 5 best Dragon Pokémon
Goodra is akin to a jack of all trades Pokémon. It’s bulky, it has a decent special attack and a decent attack, it has okay speed, and it has a huge move-pool. This allows Goodra to function as a special attacker and a physical attacker. It also works well with a Weakness Policy due to its ability to survive a super effective attack. Goodra is decent in both single and doubles battles and is a solid Dragon-type option.
Dragonite is the original best Dragon Pokémon, and it returned to Pokémon Sword and Shield with The Crown Tundra expansion. It has similar stats to Goodra and has decent bulk and speed, but it functions almost exclusively as a physical attacker. It also works extremely well as a Weakness Policy user in both singles and doubles battles.
Cynthia’s signature Pokémon also makes a return in The Crown Tundra. While Garchomp isn’t quite as threatening this generation as it has been in the past, it’s still a solid physical attacker. It has good speed and a decent ability in Rough Skin. As a Ground-type, it also has good matchups against popular electric and steel Pokémon.
Dracovish is one of the best fossil Pokémon in the entire franchise. Its signature attack, Fishous Rend, does an absurd amount of damage when Dracovish attacks first with it. Dracovish also has two abilities that heavily compliment Fishous Rend. It can take Sand Rush to help increase its speed in certain teams, or Strong Jaw to help improve its damage.
Dragapult is hands down the best Dragon Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield. It has been extremely popular since the release of the game, and for great reason. It has an absurd 142 speed along with a good attack and special attack stat. It’s versatile, powerful, and can even be used as a support. It excels in both singles and doubles battles and puts a lot of pressure on the opposing player to get rid of it.
