The MPL-MY/SG is no more. Singapore has separated from Malaysia and will have their own Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) in 2021. This news was put forth by Singapore telecoms company Singtel on Thursday, February 4th.
This comes shortly after Singapore played host to the M2 World Championships for MLBB where BREN Esports conquered the Burmese Ghouls of Myanmar to take the title. This will be the first standalone tournament (league) for Singapore after being partnered with Malaysia throughout its Pro League lifespan.
In a statement from Singtel, they explained that this split from Malaysia will allow for a “more targeted tournament which will open up opportunities for more Singapore esports teams to shine”.
The first season will have a prize pool of up to $100,000 with eight teams expected to participate. While some teams will be shoe-ins, there will also be a qualifier played in March where the top two teams will earn their place in the regular season. This means six teams will receive an invite to the league directly. Squads who typically performed well in the MPL-MY/SG such as EVOS SG and RSG SG will most likely be among the invited teams.
This is just one more step in the growth cycle of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang as it continues to gain traction around the world and in the SEA region in particular.
